In the boot of that golf hahaha

On the subject of overtaking multiple cars....like others have said it simply depends on the circumstances.

For example if you're filtering on the way to work or something...you're going down the middle so technically you're both over & undertaking multiple cars. To be fair, in this instance anything over 20mph would likely be dangerous - but you can still pass multiple cars safely at low speeds.

In this particular video, and the video at rivi - I would but both down to rider error. Not because he tried to over-take multiple cars, but because he didn't read the road properly and missed the (somewhat clear with hindsight) fact that the follow-car was intending to overtake the lead-car.

There is a time and a place for almost everything. I wouldn't speak in strict terms as "this is right" or "this is wrong" as there are simply far too many variables which make every incident unique.

kin ell ........some interesting reading on here and smudge is at the Helm of it again .........smudge theres nothing wrong with multiple overtakes ...if you get a safe multiple overtake in on your IAM test ,you get heaps of praise from the POLICE examiner ........

when gathering information from the road ahead, by being in the correct position your plan for the three stage overtake should take into consideration that if the overtake of more than one vehicle is required ..you go for it .......you dont overtake one, then swing back in then overtake another...you stay out and go past them ....Get to that ROSPA course ASAP.....you will be down graded to a bronze pass if your riding at SIlver std, but fail to overtake more than one vehicle if that overtake is on for it

At the risk of getting this thread back on track.....

I'll add my views into the mix!

The rider's not the sharpest tool in the box! OK, the driver was in the wrong, pulling into a space without checking it was clear, but just because the rider is in the right, doesn't make hospital food any nicer!

Smudger's made some valid points, that would have switched me on that there was the potential for carnage, the main one being the Golf driver is looking to make a bit of progress. Other things to consider is his positioning just before he pulls out. He's right up the arse of the car in front, so won't see if his overtake is on until the very last second, leaving him no time to check. (A decent driver would drop off the car and open their view up)

Now, where the rider fucks up. His overtake is on and he sees this earlier than the driver, not because his positioning is any good, but because he can see over the car. Had he moved to the nearside (the right in this case) his view would have opened up earlier still. This gives you another advantage as you move across the driver in his mirror. (Movement draws the eye and MAY have switched the driver on to the bike). The next mistake the rider makes is to start his overtake by accelerating before he's 100% sure it's on. The thing to do is pull out and look. If the overtake's not on, you drop back into your space. If it's on, you make your move.
When you make your move, be positive, even a small bike will out accelerate a car, get up to speed. This rider dithered rather than being assertive and getting up there. As he's been dithering, he's been sat in alongside the golf. This is the worst place to be for sitting round as demonstrated! Other things to consider could have been a quick bip of the horn, letting the driver know he was there.
Positioning is something else that's been mentioned. Get over, then if the car you're overtaking does like this driver, they've got further to go to get you, giving you time to brake/accelerate/move out of the way.

Good overtakes are all down to planning. Look at what's going on and look for the signs that the vehicle you're overtaking is going to do something stupid. To look, move around. It'll give you a different viewpoint and the movement might draw the driver's attention to you being there. Once the overtake's on, go for it, use the bike's acceleration (part of why we ride bikes!) DON'T wait around in the danger area.
Look for the signs (they'll be there!) use that information and give it out (movement, horn etc)

Think that the driver of the car you're overtaking is a complete fuckwit who's out to kill you with their stupidity and you won't be disappointed at some point!

When I did my RoSPA training particularly, It was hammered into me that you should "Get out and get a view." Then if its clear, STAY OUT and keep the view and overtake if its safe. Why on earth weave in and out a line of cars when you are out to the right with a perfectly good clear view of the road and traffic ahead?

BTW, a similar thing happened to me many years ago. As I was overtaking, a van pulled out on me overtaking an older driver doing about 25 in a 60. Luckily I was a bit further out and could just about move out of his way.
I punched feck out of his side window. Probably broke a knuckle, but I felt better :)

This reminds me a little bit of 3 minutes to live, anyone seen it? Similar situation but the rider was definitely at fault....
