So i passed my cbt today and decided to go for a ride nothing big just a little one staying local. On the ride the bike keeps cutting out, here's me thinking im having an issue with my clutch control. But this happened when i had the clutch in and was stationery with the choke fully on. So from then on i keeps the revs up and gets myself home. When home it cuts off again this time it stays off, kick start wasn't doing anything this was just flooding it. But it then started pissing out all my petrol out of the carb drain pipe. Our only option was to jump start it. This worked! So the question is what is my problem and how do i fix it? I'm baffled because when it gets going it runs like a dream its just very low revs i have an issue Any help is appreciated thanks.
The bike will not run with the choke fully on (lever all the way up) and the throttle at idle, using full choke you must keep the throttle quite a way open to stop it cutting out. This is due to the simple carb which restricts the airflow quite a bit when the choke is on all the way. The bike ran fine without choke (lever down) for me.
ahh okay thanks for that suppose that's an amateur mistake, so its all due to keep choke on it is just letting too much in at once and basically suffocating?
Yeah basically, on more modern bikes the choke is a more complicated system that enriches the mixture without restricting the airflow but the CG has a simple butterfly valve that blocks the airflow and raises the mixture ratio, you have to keep the throttle open to keep it going. It does run alright on half-choke but I found I rarely used the choke except on very cold mornings or if it had been standing for a while. It usually started fine without choke and once it has warmed for a while it'll ride fine.
Okay thanks for that tom i should of asked this really that makes a lot of sense now me being an idiot hahahahaha
Sorry, bob has just mentioned then he was giving it a closer look when we turned the choke off it was just cutting out fully is this because id been riding it with the choke on full?
You are meant to use the choke to start at a standstill then when warm you can knock it off and start riding.
It may have fouled the spark plug or flooded the combustion chamber. Maybe whip the plug out, wipe it with a rag and a some solvents and pop it back in.
another good way to clear it out is to rev the engine out while riding ..obviously only do this where you legally can ….it will clean itself up ,you haven't done anything heavy..all part of learning . just enjoy the bike and stop worrying
TIP.............Dont go mad putting spark plug back in hand tight then a little nip or you will fook the threads where abouts in the pool are you
I only asked in case you werent sure i would of come round and done it for you. But if youre by them other 2 twunts get one of them to come round and sort it for you
