it could be but its not very likely the transits don't have a gauze filter on the lift pump so any shit in the tank gets sucked up and caught buy the fuel filter unless theres something really big in there?

well i had a call saying its ready to collect.
Apparently they changed the thing on the fuel pump (metering inlet valve) and it now runs fine they "took it for a 20 mile run" and it never missed a beat.
I reckon if its fixed it i will be very happy, however i am not 100% convinced it will, it was just so bad and became a liability

Oddly though the pressure relief valve was intact, and the source of the erratic tickover was a sludged MAP sensor

glad to hear the inlet valve has sorted it
the mk7's can be a nightmare but so can most modern diesels if your planning on keeping it might be worth investing in your own code reader. I bought a cheap one for at home its called a auto com cdp it hooks up to your laptop cost me £160 and does everything the £3000 snap on one at work will

Jim - you got a link please ?
I do have a simple OBD2 reader hence being able to clear codes on the fly.

I will confirm all is well tomorrow with it. Dropping the car off for a pair of new tyres, so will bring the van back to work and am pretty sure if it makes it back to chester without missing a beat - then it's fixed.
if not it will be torched lol

    Well - it's fixed.
It was the pump metering valve (the bit on the pump) and once that was replaced it was perfect
I know the basic ODB2 reader picked up no codes, but the snap on one did which were cleared.
I drove it back to chester and it was perfect, idle was rock solid, power was consistent and no sign of fade on part throttle or jerkiness. also on the over run there was no shake like it had demonstrated over the last few weeks.

Am happy, its never sounded or ran so well.

    Thanks for the help chaps.
