Santa has just came early and delivered my Amal carbs awesome!!! No gaskets or oil seals as of yet though
Managed to get all the cases stripped this afternoon and they're ready to go for blasting! Never seen a head/valve set up like this before kind of weird, mind I've never worked on an old Honda before, had a bit of a moment getting the torsion bars out, the Clymer manual isn't very clear. In the end it was just a case of pulling the ends off and removing them, quite simple really. Didn't have to use a spring compressor to remove the valves either!
Just picked my cases up from Carl's (aka Bloke) Very impressed with them and Carl's standard of work. If you ever need owt blasting he's the man! Having a mare atm with some parts I've ordered off tint, mainly the gasket set, I think I've been skanked so I've placed an order with David Silver spares, so as soon as my bits turn up, gaskets, oil seals, cam chain ect and I've painted the cases then I'll get her rebuilt!! Full bolt set in stainless and my dome head nuts in chrome turned up today too
Does it use Torsion bars for valve springs? Looking good so far, what colour are you planning to paint the engine and how easy will it be to fit the Amals?
Yeah torsion bars mate so no valve springs as such, it was quite easy to strip the head once I figured out how to get the bars out. As for colour I've got a few colours running around in my head, a dark grey a gun metal grey or a satin black. The Amal's require some spacers/inlets making because they don't exactly match the inlet ports on the head, once they're on Pete Alton can work his magic on setting them up proper. I had a look at one the other night and I'm really impressed, the main jets are easy to get at and the needles are adjustable I'm glad I went for them instead of the Mikuni flat slides!!
Tbh Daz I was hoping to have it done by end of summer coming into autumn, the main ballache I've found is waiting around for parts. I've got the engine cases at Pete's as we speak to get them cleaned out proper after Carl blasted them plus he needs to do a few repairs to them for me and he's going to machine some inlets for my carbs. Once I've rebuilt the engine then I need to get on with the frame, wheels and suspension and re wiring it all. If anything I'd really hope to have a running engine in a rolling chassis by the end of the year haha
Powder coating and blasting on the frame I can get done cheap if you struggle, be good when its done, Ive always wanted an LC but non standard you have to improve on them just as your doing mate.
Cheers Daz, yeah they've got to be modified that's why god gave man a shed and tools Looking forward to seeing the LC done at least you've managed to get a good one I ideally wanted a norton but I think I'll be waiting till I get my pension from work or when the kids have flown the nest at least hehe.
There silly money now but I do have a contact for classic bikes over in Lincoln he gets some great bargains.
looks good tomo, nice progress so far. Now, i dont mind a bit of a clean up project, but that looked real scabby when you first got it. Looking forward to seeing it all clean and fresh !
Found this from a VJMC event last year...... just in case you wanted to put it back to standard!..
Managed to get the cylinder head rebuilt this afternoon, should be ready to start the rest of the engine this week! Inlet side all timed up nice! Exhaust side
Managed to get the lower and upper cases joined together complete with all the internals Cam chain time, had to split it because it was "endless" but got an oem Honda link to go in Top and bottom joined Pistons in Gave the barrels a coat of satin black I'll fit them and the head tomorrow night
Managed to fit the guide thingy rods to the upper case, ended up running a dye and a tap down the rods and holes because they felt a bit tight. Fkin hands are killing me now lol. Anyone spot the fail? Lol had to wind that peg out again Gasket on Barrels on Carlos nice one mate, I need some more gear blasting soon so I'll give you a bell when I'm ready bud.
