Well mr moz i think i have found the perfect video for your argument / debate. Is this bloke a good rider or is he a throttles twist away from death due to over cockyness and ridin like an absolute kant "ive come over all cockanee". I would class him as a BAD rider that just happens to have a bit of talent. I cringed so many times expecting him to be off and sliding.

Robj has some great points, myself I would say i was a slow rider compared to a lot i have seen on here,i have been riding over 15 years and still get myself into tight spots which in hindsight could have been avoided if i had thought about what might be unfolding ahead of me
I think riders fall into two catorgories
defensive a bit like me i try to think about whats going on around me,slow down in bad weather, let the faster riders pass me rather than try and keep up
offensive are the fast riders who take unnessary risks overtaking on bends brow of the hill etc, always breaking the speed limit even in bad weather they sit in the outside lane head down arse up
to conclude am i a better rider because i ride slow, keep to the speed limits and have never binned any bike i have ever owned,i dont think so

Basically Agree with everthing that's bin said.Been riding about 48 years now. My problem is constantly trying to remember what i've learned!

pS If i had to give a virgin rider advice, I'd say do an IAM course and some Trackdays, and remember you'll learn something new all the time

    a very interesting thread dave.
i used to think i was a decent rider. not nearly the fastest on the road. but safe and quick enough. i ride nearly every day, covering about 12-15k a year.
then i started doing a couple of rideouts with forum members. some good riders, some bad. still thought i was average.

as you may know im also doing the iam course. and it made me really think about my riding. and i would say it has made me smoother and safer. i also think that increasing my miles on the road, in all seasons has helped me.

i know i'll never be as quick on the road as the likes of daz etc, and i think perhaps that understanding of your ability and limits can make for a better rider.

so has any of this made me a great rider, a font of knowledge, has it f*ck.

    perhaps im now average?

Just watched that video and in my opinion he deserved to crash 10secs in. Tbh I have seen this type of behaviour quite alot ok maybe not quiet to this extent but similar and it just makes me feel quite sick. I am a fairly safe rider and (rightly or wrongly) only push when I think it's clear. Both of my crashes have been at a very relaxed pace with no "trying" if you will. So I'm safe in one respect but as some of you have pointed out maybe distance and understanding of braking etc isn't even if there is no reason to brake on a straight road with no junctions or people I guess I have no learnt that I should still prepare for it.
Mistakes are how me learn and the minute you think your good enough is the min those mistakes turn really bad.

So what were learning is were all very modest ha ha. no seriously i think this thread is good if i do say so myself! its atliest getting some thinking about riding.
so i wonder why there are so many offs? And so many willing to preach?
I started by saying there was two guys that could preach to me all day one taught me im probley very critical of my own ridin and the other taught me speed dont make you quick or good.
Im amaized threads have to be locked and so many riders go down were seeing a wealth of experiance on this thread alone so lets teach not preach.
If a member go's down a simple unlucky pal and a gws is enoughcoz its becomming pretty obvious none of us know anything really.
Please keep posting, i think its great to see what people think.

I would consider myself to be an average or slightly above average rider. I can knee down I can kinda wheelie and I was a better rider on my 6r than on my 7r "it was lighter and i could ring the neck out of it" some people say I ride to fast "and i'd agree" yet I hold others up!! I ride day in day out rain or sun. I have had two offs my first when I was 17 when a car pulled out on me and I chose to miss it rather than go through it and my second yesterday when finding some diesel. Neither of which were my falut or avoidable. I am very relaxed when i ride and my limits are my limits I know when to slow myself down and i constantly way up the roads when im riding for this i think it makes me a better rider. when i have a pillion i hardly even lean the bike over. my first bike was when i was four, twenty six years ago. ive had 7 road bikes and nearly 14 years road experience and ive only developed from following or riding with others. anyone can do 180 in a straight line but its the 30mph that'll catch you out. the best riders know there limits the sh*t ones gone past em!!!

ive got mixed feelings about this thread because yes there are some people who have strong views but isnt that the same in every aspect in life

some stuff thats posted on here makes me cringe but rather than preeching to the masses i just read it laugh and move on i post what i choose to post

try to give advice and also try to listen to advice thats been given

in my profesional career i have a job of responsability and i lead others and everyday we strive to be better at our jobs and what we produce and its this that i try to carry accross to my personal life be it riding a bike driving my car using a forklift riding or riding a horse they all have inherant dangers and being able to identify with them helps you stay alive

why are you feelings mixed mate, were just discussing what we all think makes good riders, its more a look at your own riding rather than preaching to someone about theirs.

the 1st line says what do you think about your riding the forum and the people on it so thats why im a bit reserved

i personally dont think im a good rider however i do think im a safe rider but i supose it depends on what you see is good

got my first off road bike aged 9 - 10 and was riding legally soon as i turned 16.... im now an old basterd with 31 years biking on the road.
in that time ive rode probably close on a million miles (took 4 bikes over 100k!) written off 8 bikes, broken nearly every bone in my body & had to bury 2 good mates.
you would think that wouldve made me cautious, or even scared of the road....
i can say i am very observant on the road, not just my lane, but oncoming traffic, even in the air for obvious reasons...
one thing i am guilty of is getting bored while riding.
i find it tedious sometimes bimbling in traffic and while i wouldnt say i ride recklessly, sometimes i do push the limits a bit.
my new answer to this is to ride my ped more... its great fun riding at 40mph again :)

some have said i ride too close to the rider in front... but in a staggered formation, i follow closely and don't miss much.
i find it more entertaining - have you not seen racers 1/2" off each other's bikes lol???
i wouldnt do that with a rider i'm not confident with like, but you get to know another person's style and ability.... if while out on a ride you think im right on your ass, take it as a compliment lol.. i'm not going to bump you btw....

in traffic i like to have my space on the road and refuse to be bullied into the kerb by other road users... though i consider myself to be a considerate rider / driver.
if it looks like someone is edging out, i will let him go... rather than him pull out at the last minute then play fk.
same with pedestrians... if they look like theyre going to cross, let them. better than running over them or having to swerve etc.
and the 'sorry mate i didn't see you' thing.... my argument to that is 'yes. but did you see them?'
and if so why weren't you ready for it.... as above, caution at junctions, lights, overtaking that car that's turning left... little things like watch his back lights... he may have just flashed someone out, straight into your path...

these are lessons ive learnt the hard way and i hope i can pass things onto new riders... in the last few years especially, ive ridden with a lot of new riders and like to think they may have picked up a few things and improved their confidence and safety on the road, without getting over-confident in their riding.

was talking to a guy up at the c&f not long ago & he was saying how every after every ride he gets in thinking phew im lucky i'm alive after that.... what a nob!
to me thats pushing your luck.
it might not be you who gets hurt but could be one of your mates, your g/f on the bck, another road user, or you might just bend your bike.
there are lessons to be learnt on every ride imo, no 2 rides are ever the same.
i for one will never stop learning!
i will add here though... stueo. not seen him for a while but i know a few have commented on his riding because he doesnt ride fast.
having covered tankfulls on rides with him i can categorically state he is probably one of the best road riders on this site where safety is concerned.
being a good road rider isnt imo about wheelying, kneedown, carving twisties and top speed, its about riding within your limits, missing nothing, being considerate to other road users, keeping your licence clean etc... while still having fun riding.

btw moz wtf have u been smoking lol or have you had a visit from the jehovas or sumat!

Na mate I agree it is a interesting topic and I bet most won't post to busy being Rossi lol I also agree with locking threads the one your on about now looks stupid with posts missing and no one being able reply anymore

I think that people judging quickly is not just confined to nwbs mate there are other forums and websites where people judge just as quickly

On top of the riding style, I'm quite concerned about the bike maintenance as well. Look at how much brake fluid there isn't sloshing about in the master cylinder!

I can't do wheelies, and the only times I've got my knee down, I've also got my arse down!

yah agree with that after some mad angles, stand it up and realise you just sucked in a big air bubble and you've got fk all front brake for the next bend lol!
how many have come for an all day ride with us this year and been shown string hanging out the rear tyre lol
