depends what you want Wilo. for around £40 Kais will set up the damping rebound and compression to how you tell them ! they ask you questions as to what type of riding you do etc.

most trackday companies also have a suspension specialist at the tracks. think focused events use a guy called colin 100% suspension. he knows his stuff too.

who ever adjusts the systems, get it written down ,so you can adjust further to suit the different tracks, and if it dont work adjust back . you will be astonished how smooth and fast and well set up bike feels

KAIS do a ride in service for £50, they'll set your static sag and set all your damping to suit. Any more depends on what needs doing.

Atherton's not far from the East Lancs on the way towards Manchester from Liverpool.

What is the current suspension fitted? If its OEM standard then you seriously should look at changing it

I agree on the upgrade but as I only paid £600 :) for the R1 it would cost me that again ( and more ) to upgrade the suspension and want to do a good few track days before I go down the upgrade route, I just want to make sure it's OK for the time being

i agree with Darren upgrade if you can . depending on the R1 model , you can change the springs in the front to Ohlins springs for around £100 ,if the shock will split at the rear get new damping oil and new spring on that. Maxton are best for springs , to suit your weight

Look here's my advice as per your original question about what track bike, buy the best you can afford, standard suspension, whilst you think it's ok, especially on an old bike will have you off if your not careful, it will make the whole day shit, you cannot set up old suspension full stop its probably long past its date and will need an overhaul, this will cost you about £300 front and rear plus you will need heavier springs front and rear.

First of all exactly what year is the bike ?

Ok just read your post its a 2003 can I ask are you positive that it's not an earlier model? As it makes a big difference n £600 is way cheap I'd give you a profit on it now lol

Right at the very least you need progressive springs front and rear for your weight, then you will need a spring compressor for the rear. The forks I can get done for you as you will want seals and heavier weight oil. Cost around £250
For me they need cartridge kits for the front and rear again with springs so a full service on the OEM bits. Cost around £400.

Both the above will need doing again after a while as its a track bike they get very hot and will fail. you will get better and quicker as you get the bug (which you will) or £600 - £800 now which will see you right for years to come.

Maxton for me are the best and you take your forks to them and they come back with new cartridge kits, springs, seals proper weight oil etc etc and transform the bike. Cost is around £250. There in Frodsham.

A rear race shock can be bought of the shelf, chuck the OEM in the bin there rubbish and you will go through tyres like there going out of fashion. Look around get what you can afford look at hagon, nitron and again that will come with a,spring for your weight, cost from £250 upwards depending on if you want a remote reservoir.

Suspension cannot be set up for the track at anywhere other than the track so don't waste your money. Most track days have a specialist on hand, usually around £40 and it will take all morning to get it bang on tweeting it after every session, they are brilliant and will make your bike feel mega.

Why ? Wets on wheels is bollox you'll use them once or twice a year spend your money on the bike and if it makes you feel better I'll get you a set of wets for £85 and if you need them you can swap them at the track for £30.

Trust me I've raced and I've tracked for years, why do you think I love ktm so much ? Because they are ready to race. They put suspension that works on track as standard.

I tell everyone the same thing wether there tracking or racing stop spending money on stuff you don't need the most important thing on a track or race bike is the suspension. It will make you faster, it will save you money and above all else it will make you happier.
