Okay, So I know smudge is doing a rebuild, and he has inspired me to do mine. Mine will be a streetfighter with upright bars, rather than sports. Ive begun stripping it all down; see picture below. The engine corrosion due to salt is gross. My goal is to drop the engine, and clean it, check the valve clearences, check the clutch, waterpump etc and paint it black. I'm going to powdercoat the frame instead of just rattle can job, rebuild the forks. Ive made a DIY ultrasonic cleaner to clean bolts with, hopefully I can clean the original bolts up back to almost new, copper grease them and put them back in. Ill also be shortening the loom and doing some other interesting crap. The main goal is that I don't want it to look like a 20 year old bike, I want it to look nice and above all, be 100% reliable. The reason for it is, is that I want to obtain cheap "carnet de passage" which is based on bike value when traveling abroad. Updates will be fortnightly, but Ill spend at least 10 hours every fortnight dedicated to it, and will update with pics. Better pics than these two anyway
Yeah its filthy tbh, i cant wait till its all shiney and new.. Pics and video of my diy ultrasonic cleaner in action with before and after pics will be added as and when
Really looking forward to this. Keep considering the streetfighter look for mine, but no idea how much work is involved with the clocks etc.
Okay so first update.. Engine out of frame. Take off carbs, begin cleaning.. Fuck me, cleaning is hard work...!! Lots of these cloths like this later.. Still a long way till I've finished prepping for paint though.. Took the water pump off and cleaned behind it and the back of it... I'll do another little update tomorrow, I'm going to remove everything I can and clean the fuck out of it.. Lol.
Wow cleaning an engine so i can even just begin spraying it is a mammoth task...!!! Spent hours cleaning and masking off.. Gonna research places that do powdercoating so i can get the frame forks swingarm and wheels done... Anyone know any decent local ones?
I like that they have their prices online, on that basis ill load my car up maybe next week and take them the stuff..!
Almost finished, there are a few areas i need to go over but it looks decent enough...! Also trying to make my 600rr rear end fit and sit flush.. Putting tool tubes under the rear where the exhaust usually goes.. For dry secure storage. Rearish shot: Side profile: Ignore the grubbyness of it all, and the switch etc, I'm just trying to get everything lined up so that it bolts straight on after the frame is all nice and powdercoated..
Lee - High temp Engine paint. Dave - Tool tubes are ace there are so many uses for them. I keep bike tools and puncture repair stuff in one of them, and waterproofs in the other.
Rebuilt mine last year with another frame, s/arm, forks, yokes etc. wiil be interesting to see how you sort h/lamp relay unit. any problems pm me. With my Shite memory did loads of photo's and drawings so i could put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
