Its hardly avoidable for the rider either, If you were to reflexninjaswerve into the opposite side of the road you could put yourself in deeper shit, if you can think that fast!

    Wow.

If she had turned fraction of a second slower the kid in the front seat would have copped for it. How would an IAM qualified chap view this?

    Yes, no er maybe !

His positioning is spot on, as is the following bike, both 'SHOULD' be visible to the oncoming traffic and the speed doesn't seem excessive. The rider, understandably, hasn't expected the car to pull across him as he hasn't braked.

What I try and push on the IAM courses is movement draws the human eye.

Most drivers don't ride bikes and therefore are less aware of bikes! (Understatement of the century there!) Drivers will see the bike, but not respond to it, it's to do with evolution and perceived threats, the brain can only deal with so much information so prioritises things. Basically you, as a rider, seem small and insignificant and aren't picked up as a danger, so the brain disregards you. All of a sudden, you're there and by then it's too late. (Most of us will have experienced the feeling of a car moving out and then suddenly slamming on, across your path, while your there thinking 'this is going to hurt!') There's been a fair bit of research into this recently and they call it Looming.

The best way to avoid this is by the rider moving about in his lane. Yes, we shouldn't have too as it's the driver who's at blame, but that doesn't make hospital food taste nicer! As soon as you see a car, you should be thinking that the driver is going to take you out. Don't assume because you're in the right it's OK. By moving from side to side in your lane, you're drawing attention to yourself. Look for clues that the car about to do something, where are the wheels pointing, are they moving, where's the driver looking etc and be ready to take action (brake, steer, accelerate, horn, whatever) Upping your obs like this is hard tiring work, but it's better than being strapped to a machine that goes 'ping'!

Ride constantly thinking ALL drivers are fuckwits and you won't be surprised!

Nice post rob, but I have been pulled twice on the bike and once in the car for not maintaining a consistent line inside my lane, and having to explain myself to the police is such a massive ballache.

They usually say that they have followed me down the road, and notice that I have moved from riding in the center of the lane, to the right hand side of my lane, and then back again. And then to explain why. They do checks for what seems like half an hour and then let me go telling me to watch out in future.

But I guess it beats eating through a straw. :)

I tend not to argue rob, I am more concerned about passing the attitude test and leaving as soon as possible without having to pay a fine, receive points, or get a producer.

I have a friend in the police, and I have had my fair share of 'tellings off' that would have been much more severe if I decided not to 'play ball'. - So I know how it works.

I don't want to argue the toss, even if I am 100% right, and they are 100% wrong - I prefer the easy life.

On topic: I watch out whenever there is a car turning in front of me as per the video, as bumps in the road could cause my headlight to rise temporarily and the car driver could interpret that as a flash! So even more caution is taken.

Sadly there was no indicator even used by the car in the video, and I would have been caught out by that car too.

Fair point. I know the system being in the cops myself. I don't flash the badge or anything like that (and never would!) but when I have been stopped, knowing the direction a roadside interview is going, means I can turn it to how I want! :D

if there is a car which seems to be looking right through me, I do a weave as if warming my tyres up for a couple of seconds. seems to get their attention due to the unusual sideways movement of my silhouette and headlight. followed by a wave of thanks for not killing me when im past the danger zone.

And that's my point above, movement draws the eye!

Or the child in the front seat was distracting her. Im sure anyone who has kids will tell you how difficult it can be to concentrate sometimes when you have one or 2 kids making a racket/crying/throwing up etc in the car. Im not trying to absolve her of any blame but calling her a "BITCH" for making a mistake is pathetic.

How does having an opinion / view of a situation make me pathetic ? ,, you have yours I have mine , and I can sure as hell bet she got called far worse from the rider involved.
