Just about finished with the bandit!!! lol

Well I decided to go out for a little ride towards winsford the other day which resulted with the follow:



Plus £100 recovery charge and a few hours getting a sun tan watching the bikers fly by - fair play some people did stop including a wagon to check if i needed a lift.

So the bike started to missfire after a long ride up hill on a duel carageway about 50-60mph - I carried on hoping that it might clear up but then had to pull over and switched it off as it was getting worse.

Tried to start it and it was just cranking over - after about 5-7 seconds I stopped trying and left it to cool.
Tried again to start - this time the electrics where dead!

Checked the fuses under the seat in the fuse box - checked all the connections in the headlight - gave up and called recovery.

Got it home and found the main fuse located here! FFS.


Here it is behind the white plastic cover which sides off when you press in the tabs:



So I replaced the fuse and got the electrics back. I managed to fire it up but it sounds like its only running on two/three cylinders.

Anyone have a clue what might be causing this?

Might be something to do with your spark leads? Might have been shorting hence the running like shit and eventually its blown the fuse? Check the HT leads and stuff, make sure the spark plugs are clean etc... give the carbs a clean make sure theres not shit blocking the jets

 

i had a spare coil so swapped it out today - still the same issue bob.
Whats the best way clean the carbs / inspect?

 

Check all the other fuses, look for loose wires, rips or tears in anything. Only takes one short on a wire to blow all the fuses and cause some major fuck ups

If that gives you no luck give your carbs a clean and a balance, may have been running like crap and has fuse has just shorted coincidentally

 

could be quite a few things, plugs, carbs/fuel, massive chicken strips etc:whistle:

 

That might be the problem with mine.

 

Yeah I think the fuse has just blown from attempted starts.

Any idea on how to get the carbs cleaned and balanced? I was quoted £150+ from local garage - and to be fair - I might just put it up for sale / spares or repairs if that the case as its mot and tax are due in a month.

 

Carb clean is a lot easier than i first thought ! If i can do it anyone can haha... Take petrol tank off, take out air box etc for ease and take the carbs out, unscrew them, get a clean soft cloth in there and give it a wipe around, make sure there isnt anything collected in the bottom, make sure the jets arent blocked (get a little pin or something in there). Plenty on here who are willing to help you mate, dont go paying garage prices!

 

This is how it stands now:


Checking the wiring diagrams to make sure it's not just something electrical first before diving in there bob.

The plugs where replaced about 3 months ago - (not saying they couldn't be the issue but would be supprised - will pull the plugs and test with a spare)
Tried a different coil - just wanting to test other wiring first.

 

doubt it's worth selling for spares/repair, chances are it will be something cheap and easy to sort out.

 

Look at tension in that chain there's your problem lol

I think it might be the ignitor/ecu/cdi box that sits under the seat.
Just need to buy one from somewhere.

 

oh I think I seen you as the lorry pulled over , were you right by oulton park in a little cutout ?
we were going to stop but seen you talking the truck driver so thought you was sorted

 

Before you do that (as I would doubt it's the ECU) check the alternator and reg/rec. The clue here is that the main fuse blew while riding, it won't blow from continued starts unless there is a problem.
You could have a stator coil that is breaking down, this then spikes the electrics and blows the fuse.

 

Yeah that was me - to be honest - it was quite a bad place for the lorry to stop as the road had a hidden dip / solid while line.
To be fair there was nothing that could have been done at the side of the road to get it going again so good thing you didn't stop and waste your day.

The fuse popped after I had tried to restart the bike a fair few times, it wasn't the cause of the bike comming to a halt. I am awaiting a replacement ecu was only cheap to test before moving on to other stuff. Will update when I have tried a different ecu

 

The fuse may not be why it came to a halt but the stator or reg/rec probably were, the fuse will have blown because of this.
Humour me and check them.
Disconnect the charge wire from the battery/solenoid and start the bike, if it's fine problem solved.

 

Made no difference, but thanks to suggestion

 

Put the bike back together - left the fuel tap on prime for 10-15 sec - fired it up - sounded like it was running on three.
After about a 45-60secs it was back running on all four!

Took it for a ride around the block and it back on form, just wish I knew why it happened, hate not knowing.
