But it doesn't, gun crime in this country has risen since the pistol ban, if all guns are licensed there are fairly rigorous checks on safe storage, ammunition and gun dealers. What can't be regulated are the guns coming in mainly from russia and eastern europe that probably anyone who lives in a big city can get within a couple of days if you know a couple of dodgy people.

Has anyone here ever had a loaded handgun pointed at them in anger at a distance of 10 yards? Has anyone on here had to go to a family home at 11 am on Christmas morning to deal with the death of a 9 yr old boy who had accidentely been shot in the head by his 7 yr old younger brother after his fuck wit of a father left his Christmas present in the lounge with a live round still in it? Try saying there there there, it will be alright, to the distraught mother of that child and her other son. I won't go into detail about suicides which have involved shotguns. (Numerous)
Unfortunately in my police service, all of these things have happened to me.
Bet you can guess what my stance is on the subject.
Mention has been made by some about the police being armed as a matter of course. Personally, there is no way I would carry a firearm.
When the police do shoot and kill someone the first thing the authorities try to do is convict the poor sod who shot that person for murder. Erm no thanks. Thankfully I am in the twilight of my service and I can't see the day when I could be ordered to carry a firearm.

TBH, this is a great thread Cab. Lots of people with different ideas and views. No name calling, no Facebook crap. It makes a change from some threads that are a bit lacking in content. ;-)

Well it's possible to hire guns or even hitmen over the Internet quite easily and untraceable. there is no shortage of weapons in the area of all shapes and sizes. The guy who got shot around the block from my sisters house in noris Green was shot with a semi-auto handgun. sound was unmistakable. knowing the right people could result in somebody with a grudge having a weapon in a matter of hours if that. theyre stashed all over the place. the way i like to view it is that in most circumstances guns are used by bad people to shoot other bad people.i say let them shoot each other and thin the herd out a bit. the less drug dealers and thugs around the better.
The justice system is failing miserably at getting them off the streets so leave them to deal with themselves. i understand there are always innocent people who get cought up in it but a bit of collateral damage is to be expected and should be tolerated.

Again, you've either not read or not understood the thread fully. We are NOT talking about implementing an American-style "right to bear arms", which allows people to carry loaded firearms around for self-defence. We are discussing the reintroduction of laws that previously existed prior to 1997 which permitted the provate ownership of handguns, subject to some very strict conditions. On of those strict conditions is that you do not transport a firearm (by person or in a vehicle) whilst loaded. We have never been permitted to "carry guns" in the sense that you are implying - you were permitted to carry a handgun for transportation to another place (rather than just carrying it around) and it had to be unloaded and fully covered (so it was not directly visible to any other person). This is very different to the US right to bear arms, so please don't confuse the two concepts as they are entirely different in terms of both practice and reasoning.

Would you say your views on arming officers are shared by most of your colleagues, or would they like the choice?
Would you change your opinion if there was a universal backing of an officer who had discharged his weapon, instead of almost a witch hunt?
Id personally like to see you given the choice at least.

That differs quite a lot from the opinions of a fair number of cops I have spoken with, (but you should know, obviously.)
As I understand it, the law talks about "Equal force." For example, if you shoot someone with a shotgun while defending yourself from a fist attack that is not on, but if the bad guy also had a gun then you can claim you where using equal force. I believe it is the same law in the 'States.

And they took a dim view of calling in at the Offy on the way home from the range and leaving a gun on the back seat even if the car was still occupied and not left un attended ....... may be the fact it was an Uzi may have upset the locals a wee bit . but still brining in the armed response unit was a bit OTT. THINK DERBYSHIRE WERE A BIT SHORT OF EXCITEMENT THAT WEEK

    This
I most defo agree with .....my brother found a burglar in his house when he returned home once, the guy had "sorted the dog " and was ransacking the place , he never heard my brother arrive home .......well a bit more than a scuffle took place and the intruder was admitted to the local district Hospt , two days later my brother was charged with ABH yet the criminal got of scott free ! It was all sorted properly in court , 8 mths later , but the cost and stress it caused my brother was totally uncalled for ,, the law needs sorting in this area ,
