So the other day I drained the oil and completely forgot to put fresh in whilst down my road. Then I hear a horrid rattling noise.

So I put oil in and went to run it today and bang! Smoke everywere.!!!!!

    So new engine time? Fml

    A pretty big error that!

How much is a replacement engine? You'll need some specialist tools and a decent amount of expertise/strength!

Is it not worth stripping and checking to see what the actual damage is ? May work out cheaper than buying a 2nd hand engine that there could be problems with.

The thinking is replace the engine as a quick fix, then sell the various parts off the old one. Starter motor etc.

Just a thought but that looks like you could get an R6 engine in there, seeing as your getting an engine I was thinking it would be a nice little project. :D

defo go for the r6..... r1 would be an awesome winter project

    possible damage.....

wrecked bores / rings, camshaft lobes annealed, camshaft journals fkt, mains shells & big end white metaling fkt, transmission bearings shot, the list is endless.
if you are extremely lucky you may have just overheated it and popped the head gasket.
ive run a few engines dry in m time & they've been ok with a couple of exceptions.

i think you'd be as well popping the heads off for a quick look at the bores etc....
did the oil light not come on?

there is an additive for motocross & trials 4 stroke engines that you mix with the oil.... i forget what it's called, but if you hit a rock and smash the sump, you can continue safely without damaging the engine...

i think youre panicking a bit - sh*t happens, no need to over-react.

r6 engine? hmmm im interested now!!!!

@ VVTR no oil light and perhaps your right it could be minimal damage but i have no way of teeling :/ I can take things apart and back together again but have no idea what im looking at!

The thing i dont get is that it still runs! Just like shite, and vibrates like mad.
Anyone fancy poping round tomoro and having a look?

Awww gutted elliot. We've all done silly things though.

I forgot to put the dipstick back in properly after checking the oil and it came out up rivi, oil everywhere! Luckily shut the bike off quick enough so no damage.

R6 engine would make the swap worth doing! lol

Right swap done believe it or not in total 11 hours (for an amature amazing i think) But it all runs back wheel spins etc.

Not taken it out as i need to rest and then check it over before i trust it.
Was a very hard job but im glad i did it myself makes me value the bike so much more!

And ended up with a fazer engine for 300quid with only 12k miles on it. Am happy to say the least.

I'd just like to stress that my knowledge lies with computers not bikes! The most I've done before is chain and exhaust. This was miles above me and was a massive risk.

So if anyone is scared of doing work on your bike, get stuck in!
After all the worst that can happen is you need a new engine ;)
