I own a 2007 CBF600SA5 (fared, ABS). I/Recently, its started losing power while going down the road, then picking up again. From the way the dash lights up (HISS and ABS lights come on for a few secs, then go off again) its like I turned the key off and on again, like it reset.. I assumed it was the Reg/rec on its way out, as the lights were flickering ect, so i replaced it yesterday with another. But this morning, I turned the key after stopping normally for a few minutes and... nothing. Noo dash, no headlights... nothing. It was like the thing was competely dead. After 5 minutes or so, i turned the key again and it suddenly came back to life, and I continued my journey normally. I suspect an electrical short or similar problem, since it seems to be forgetting that the key is in there. But add this to my abs issue (suddenly kicks in when i set off from lights occasionally) and it has me concerned that my ecu has been fried. After a bit of advice, am i on the right track before i start to splash the cash? Any and all advice would be appreciated. Needless to say, the bike will not be being used until sorted.
Can I ask if the chain tightening suggestion would really affect the shorting of the electricals, or is this a wind up? Only I've had a similar experience on my 125 and have doused it in WD40 but it still looses power all of a sudden for a brief second. Mostly its ok but it does happen at the most inopportune times. (like at lights, grrr) I will of course look into the battery connections, but the chain???? For someone like myself without the experience a lot on this forum have had, this sounds like a glass hammer reply, and I would genuinely like to know.
It was a wind up, one of our more fun members that has since left the forum, did and said some highly amusing things, but didn't see what was wrong with it. An example is the fact he tried to adjust the headstock of a HIRE BIKE with a hammer and chisel! I miss good old smudgers posts
Did smudger leave? Only i'm used to anyone that leaves putting a post up complaining that no one will let them leave...... then coming back again before leaving again.
it's meant to do that, honda wiring is a fookin' joke to say the least!! i assume you have the normal 'lets make a wiring connector that will short all the electrics out and screw the immobiliser in the ecu' main connection around the side of the airbox? fiver says this is starting to play up, time to strip the loom and clean stuff up. bin the connectors and just solder and heat shrink the connections instead.
but from someone who knows how shit honda wiring is:thumbsup: anyone who puts earths and lives in the same multi connector has to be completely stupid to say the least.
Smudges not left ! .....he posted around xmas time . He's not on as frequent . Didn't he sell his bike on eBay ? Start up a new relationship with a lady ? .... Good luck to him . Happy new year smudge if your having a nosy in on this thread . Please post some more legendary stuff Edit......just had alook ....he lasted posted on Thursday just gone But let's get back to petes electric problem .
Pete I'd say ECU failure is likely, or maybe the connectors from the loom into it are loose/shorting out. Just having this problem fixed on my Benelli. I know italian bikes aren't famed for their electrics but Jap bikes are- hence almost everyone bar the OAP old skool bikers will have owned one of the brands. Possibly the main cause is going to be a safety switch within the ECU cutting out everything when it's getting to hot. If it were the reg/Rec you'd have completely different issues. Not had to deal with ABS on a bike luckily but it's also likely to be a sender or solid state relay within the ECU. Not saying this but is legal but find an identical bike locally for sale and take for a test ride and plug its ECU into yours and test the problem. Did this legally at KJM with my bike as they were fixing a Nelli at the time (phew)
Found an Ecu for the cost of a brew at a bike breakers, plugged it in, checked and tightened all my connections, and hey presto, all is fine again in the world of the Cbf! Had a little 50 mile bimble last night without a single hiccup.
