why fit a split link ? just get a proper link and then hammer the rivet heads over so its a real link then and much much less change of coming off ..if any
True, but I do it with the link on top of the rear sprocket so the sprocket can hold the links together while I fit it.
I'm I wrong in thinking at least on this chain and the link ontop of the rear sprocket that I should face the open head towards the rear of the bike and should in fact of the open end facing the front of the bike?
You are correct in your original statement. But it faces the other way when on the bottom. Just always put the rounded nose of the clip facing the direction of chain travel.
I wish I was shocked by this thread but sadly not... Nathan this isn't down to any luck fate or higher being this is poor maintenance you say around 40cm of play? Why on earth would you be riding a bike like that??
So if your saying its within tolerances then surely it's the dealers fault? I find it hard to believe but please prove me wrong.
It was around 35-37MM still within tol but needs looking at. I can link you the service manual. http://www.automotivespartsshop.com/file-download/YAMAHA-YZF-R125-SERVICE-MANUAL.pdf
That's dodges what I said, if it's within tolerances then the fault lies with the bike or chain, so the dealer is responsible surely?
He means, did you measure it at more than one point? As a chain can be tighter at some points than others. It sounds as of your chain was far too loose in all honesty, having done quite a number of miles on these bikes i can safely say this is the first time i've heard of this happening to a well maintained bike. Although the photos of this look like that split link came off some time ago, and its been pulling for quite some while to bend the link to the extent that it has been. The yzf isnt known for its arm wrenching torque after all
Hey, it has a whooping 15bhp.......That's more then some lawn mowers! No I just did the test at the middle, I figured the closer to either sprocket the less slack meaning I get a false reading. I don't think the link came off some time ago, I really don't think the link is strong enough to hold that long but hey, I'm not a mechanic. But I've been wrong before. I've got a new chain coming anyway (Don't want to risk putting the old one on with new split link , looks like one of the links is bent) a nice D.I.D H-D, I like D.I.D used them before , very strong.
