Are you saying its ok to break the law because its an absolute offence?

I get some police turn a blind eye and some don't but why do people brake the law every day by speeding and its "OK" but other laws are not "OK" to break. Maybe I should get my coat as pete suggest :bag:

No, just the opposite in the eyes of the law, there are very few laws as clear cut as speeding but because of the scale and the potential impact of being a few mph over most police forces disregard a few MPH and traffic plod (Cheshire excepted) tend to use a bit of discretion if it's just excess speed and not riding/driving like a dick.

well i hadnt been caught for speeding in 29 years until early this year.maybe i had been lucky. but it sure makes me think about my speed, cause £100 fine is not ideal for doing 37 in a 30 zone in the welsh countyside.

I didn't buy a 1000cc super naked to stick to the speed limits.

    I'll ride as far/fast as I can see/stop.

Exactly wed all be on mopeds otherwise. If bikes didnt go fast they wouldnt exist in the form they do. 100 quid over 29 years isnt bad lol

People speed daily and nothing happens so they carry on.. It's only when you actually get caught and there's consequences that you stop and think..

As long as your paying attention you should be able to spot 99% of police.

No-one likes to be caught but its easily avoidable....

The way I see it, bikes and cars are becoming safer with ABS and other bits and bobs...even tyres are far more advanced than they were 10 years ago.

    Road surfaces are improving too.

But speed limits? They've been the same in most places - or been made even slower. Few places I know of where the speed limit has ever gone up.

Speed limits are there as a static, non-variable 'limit'. They do not take into account:

    - The capabilities of your vehicle
    - The capabilities of the driver/rider
    - Weather conditions
    - The traffic

(Other than of course variable speed limits like motorways).

I ride how I see fit. There are times & places where I'd consider it safe to do double the speed limit...for example derby road. That road is a 30mph (up by the chinese supermarket) - but that road is extremely busy during rush hour, and is made up of a large amount of trucks & HGVs. A low speed limit makes sense. There are also side roads.

Late evening, that road can be completely empty. Move into lane 2 and you can easily sit at 60mph and have enough time & space to prepare for any potential vehicles leaving the side roads.

Most people know this...This is why the police are there at least once a week with speed guns.

If they cared about safety, they'd have a permanent camera installed. But they don't...they sit in the bus stops and the side roads waiting and making some extra cash.

Time & a place for speed. Too many variables for blanket limits to be in place.

To be clear, I'm not saying I do double the limit - but I would consider it safe to do so in the right conditions, time, and place.

only when im worried your following me home ;) haha.

Id call myself pretty tame tbh (although im sure everybody will probably say the same, even the absolute hooligans) there are days where Ill go out and observe the speed limits completely. i actually find it strangely entertaining to do so, likea bit of an extra challange lol . However there would be certain situations where im happy to accept the extra risk in situations/areas i personally deem it to be acceptible.....

Late night, empty roads with a good road surface where there is no traffic and pedestrians etc around, wide roads such as dual carriageways with great visibility and a low risk of danger to myself or others and nsl areas that im familiar with. ill happily go at a speed I consider to be fit for the circumstances where i know i can stop in the distance seen to be clear. i dont push my limits, and the safety of myself and others always comes first.

in my opinion- modern machines (both car and motorcycle) are much more agile and capable of stopping in distances much shorter than what was common when the majority of speed limits were introduced. i dont think speed limits should be increased but i consider speeding to be completely acceptable when done in a safe manner.

Ah bollox. I was gonna give it ago. I got caught last Monday night on the M5 between junctions 5&4 doing 57 in an average 50 mph zone that went on and on and on and on &on. It was 0130 there were no road workers present and no other traffic. I had done about 170 miles and drifted over the average by the minimum amount for a ticket. West Mercia wankers !
