Albert Pierrepoint's autobiography, fascinating read about his life, trade and his thoughts of the people he despatched.

Yep, the last official hangman. Took care of quite a few including the Nazi war criminals.

Some great recommendations that I've not tried - I remember reading Zola's Thérèse Raquin and La Bête humaine a long time ago - compelling but dark reading at times !

All great books, read The Drinking Den as well if you haven't already.
I've moved on to If this is a Man/The Truce by Primo Levi, read it before but not for a good while, it's life changing stuff about his time in a concentration camp written in an amazingly objective factual way.

I used to read a lot but got out of the habit in recent years. Probably down to being more glued my laptop or my phone than anything else. I read the whole Dune series of books (by Frank Herbert) back to back and that was an incredible read. I doubt it would've been anywhere near as good reading one at a time though. Also read all the Anne Rice vampire books and was really very taken with them too, and positively love the Ian M Banks sci-fi/"Culture" books.

I picked up A Quantum Murder by Peter F Hamilton recently and am really enjoying it too. I watched the film A History Of Everything the other week which reminded me that I have Stephen Hawkings A Brief History Of Time on my bookshelf. Read it years ago but am seriously tempted to pick it up again once I've finished the Quantum Murder book...
