Bike Runs Better When Cold?

    Any ideas why?

Few of you might already know my bike runs a bit s**t to be honest. Need to get it in for a service as soon as i have some spare cash...

Anyway, this morning going to Uni, started it up, choke on for couple of minutes, was freezing cold outside, bike ran perfect, so smooth and sounded amazing.

Coming home from Uni, had warmed up a bit outside, started up, choke on while i put helmet gloves on etc... started riding and it was like crap! felt like the clutch was slipping, kept spluttering, was loosing power at about 4k revs. If i try and go a steady 30mph in say 3rd gear it just wont move, power dies and have to kick it down into 2nd and build the revs up to get it going again. Its not petrol or oil before anyone asks that. Petrol tank is almost full, oil has been freshly changed 100 miles ago, drained old oil, put in fresh 10w 40 semi synthetic stuff. This isnt the first time its happened either. Every day is pretty much the same, if its cold (weather wise) it runs great, when its a bit warmer it runs like crap :-/

Sounds like fuel mixture to me my cbr was not the same but more or less as the mix screw was 3 turns richer than it should be

I'm no expert but I'd say sounds like its running rich?

When its cold its burning the extra fuel like YEAH I NEED IT

but then when its warm the extra fuel isn't getting burnt so its just stuttering...

Would also explain the flames every 2 seconds!

Also with your exhaust your fuel mix should of been turned down anyway hence why yours backfires it's too rich

    Mine does a similar thing.
Fuels beautifully when I leave the house.
Runs worse at low revs esp once warm.
    Too rich.
But im not chancing setting up the mixture blindly.
When I get round to it ill get the af ratio checked on a dyno.
    Too rich isnt too bad.
Go too lean however and you can fuck an engine.

Agree but too rich also gives you crap mpg lol

If you are not sure when it was last serviced I would look into sorting that as well as you never know the state of oil and filter.

I would be happier with that.
Mine only returns about 50mpg so its deffo rich.

loads it could be. good FULL service and take it from there, when i say full that means pulling and checking the carbs etc

based on your flames id definitely say running rich id think. could whack a steak on the back and have it flamegrilled by the time you get home :p. im almost positive ive had chunks of carbon build up or something fired out of your can and hit me in the face too lol ;)
a nice service will do it a world of good. should especially get the brakes checked and serviced too as iirc you said they'd seized after the bike was sat for a while?

Will defiantly get it in for a good service when i can. Obviously is the fuel / air mix then as fuel is more dense in the cold (is that right?) thats for the help :)

Sounds rich, as the weather gets colder and engine will normally run a bit better as the air is more dense.

If it's running rich this can play havock and can do so nasty damage to the top of the piston and bores. Fuel can wash down the bores and sneak through the ring gaps into the oil fuel thickens oil turning it to sludge. Excess fuel can cause exhaust valve seat problems where the fuel is still burning as it exits the cylinder on the exhaust stroke.
Lean running is as bad, excess heat in the combustion chamber causes hot spots on the piston and valves which can lead to guttering on the valve heads. I've got engine parts coming back with a number of these issues due to over fueling, including a cylinder head with only one valve left in place out of 4.

These are problems that can occur at the extreme of fueling, but will be starting if fuel is not corrected.

Try to get it sorted as soon as possible.

engines run better in cold weather cause the air is more dense, thats why turbos have intercoolers on them.;)

Is the exhaust black also put your hand infront of your exhaust then smell it is it an ashy smell or a bit of a petroly smell petrol smell to much fuel ashy smell to much air. i had a similar thing with mine clean the carbs check float hieghts check the a/f mixture screws set them to factory settings then sync the carbs you should be fine if still the same could be a diaphram £££ emulsion tubes just get your bank card ready i did
