Is it possibe to fix what sounds like 1 of the big ends gone? or would it be cheaper to look for a new engine? Bike is an sv650 1999

    course it is m8.
drop the oil & coolant, engine out, strip it down.
i think theres a free workshop manual for your bike in the free downlaods bit in the garage

    not a big job tbh.
you'll need to drop the sump off then you can get at the big end bolts from underneath.
pop em off (remembering which one goes where, then assess any damage to the crank.

if youre lucky it will just be the white metaling thats gone and you can just replace the shells for the same colour.
the shells will only cost you about £40 so might ot be as bad as you think.
if you end up doing a complete strip the gaskets alone will set you back over a ton.

    drop the oil first lol!!!!
take lots of pictures to remind you how it goes back in.

who told you the big end had gone? did you run it dry or sumat?
when its out, take the timing cover off, take the plugs out, sump off, pop the conrod ends off and take it from there.
if u get stuck just ask!

that garage probably said iits a big job cos it is, compared to just doing oil & filters etc.... and theyre probably thinking of full engine rebuild, stripping it from the top down.

shouldnt be necessary tbh unless the damage is worse than expected.

If you are doing your big ends, then why at you dropping the engine out. When I stripped the engine on the ZX6 I also inspected the big ends, this was done by droping the oil, removing the exhaust and sump.

Hey presto you can then get to the good bits, without taking the engine out, saves time and effort.

The sump won't just come away, bloody hell that sounds like some crap engineering. It would have saved you a lot of work pal. Never mind you will have to revert back to taking the engine out.

Take your time and be patient.

yeh sean, some bikes you can do this, some you cant, depends how the engine is slung and the design of the frame.
on the firestorm you can (with a bit of fkin about)
on the sv, as wardy says, the motor has to come out - no biggy though, you can pop it out in a hr or 2 :)

you usually have to cut slots in a (19mm) socket if its the one im thinking of - like a castelated nut??
if you can't do that, knock it round with a hammer and punch, thats what i ended up doing on the firestorm, which is a very similar nut.

the big one, you need a 23mm 6 point socket (and a big hammer to knock it on lol)

looks like you have to split the casings on your engine.

    take lots of pics!

have a look in the service manual m8.

    http://www.carlsalter.com/download.asp?p=1196

there is a 200-2003 manual there too and a parts fiche, which will be handy for ordering up the correct part numbers when you've found the problem.
