Batteries, is there any real difference?

My battery went during the summer and being a big V Twin needs a big battery. After going around the web found that Honda OE batteries are actually better and cheaper (Honda are doing an offer on them at the moment) Went to Hunts and the made sure it was correctly charged before letting it out of the shop as apparently if it isn't done properly you wil knacker the battery. It does ring true as my last battery was only 2 years old, but hadn't had the TLC when first bought. (Hunts have invested in a battery charger for this reason and haven't had an issue with one yet)

particularly if you have a Meta alarm or another that draws a lot of current draining the battery.

Varta on the Guzzi - needs the torque for starting. Will invest in an Oddyssey next time as heard good things about them. Will probably do similar when the one on the Trumpet dies. Cheapy is good enough on the CB250RS as that'll run and start happily even with a broken battery wire....

Just out of curiosity reading through the posts...

Why does it make a difference if the bike is a single/v twin/inline 4 etc?

The circuitry is all the same, where does the difference come into it?

Large performance Vtwins draw a lot of current on the initial start up from the starter as they require more torque to turn over generally, being high compression thumpers

Same as with kickstarts. Big difference kicking over a big 4 compared to a big V twin. So you tend to need something that will deliver a much higher cranking current and torque, hence a better battery. A four spins easier, generally has lower power starter, so can use a cheaper or lower power battery.
A GT550 has a starter about 400watts, the Guzzi T3 was about 600 Watts, so the difference is a current drain of 35 or 50 Amps if it maintains 12V. And usually under starting load you get a voltage drop of 2-4 volts.
