I'm hoping someone can help me... I'm looking for a camera to take on holiday and I don't know much about them so would rather ask now than buy something and find out I've been had...

I basically want something that will take nice memory shots... I'm not after something that I can win photography awards with, but also don't want something that's shit

The main thing is that it can fit into my pocket, as it's something I'd like to take with me on the bike or days out with the mrs etc...

    Decent battery and memory

    Can take 1080 HD video

I want it to be quick to use, and ideally one that can take burst shots (just in case I get someone blinking etc so they're caught on the 'follow up' shot)

Most of the above seems to be true of many of the compact cameras, but the thing I'd quite like is decent optical zoom. Obviously the best for this seem to be bridge cameras, but they are just too big to get into a pocket...

I was hoping for a budget of 100-150... but I've seen the Sony HX50 and it looks worth the extra

Can anyone (who knows what they're talking about!) offer any comment or guidance?

    Thanks

As long as you don't take a picture of yourself you should be fine

Thanks Jazzi, I'll have a look

It seems to have lower optical zoom, but is cheaper

The thing with zoom is anything over 20x is practically useless unless you have a tripod (even with image stabilization its very difficult to keep the camera steady while zoomed in!)

I have a Samsung NX1000, capabilities of a DSLR camera but in the body of a compact. When it has its 30mm lens on it I can easily fit it in my pockets. It's not a cheap bit of kit though unfortunately, and does need to be carried in a bag if you use more than one lens.

I'll try and find one of those in the flesh... the Sony did seem to be very nicely built, so hopefully that will be the same

Maybe I should get a small tripod too... may come in handy as lots of them seem to have the ability of remote trigger via your phone, so may be good for some shots

I've read a few reviews of different cameras, but when they start talking about the different settings I'm afraid I am a little lost!

Jazzi is probs your best bet for that mate :) i did however used to have a Fuji Finepix S4500. Its called a bridge camera because it was made pretty much to bridge the gap between a digital and a DSLR camera. has all the function of a DSLR (Manual Exposure, ISO, Shutter speed) but still the ease of use of a digital (point and shoot). Can pick them up for around £100 now :)

Don't worry about optical zoom........ just move the camera closer to your face

Cheers for the reply bob - When I went to look around today I was aiming for the bridge cameras, but they're a little bit too big really... shame because they seem good spec for the price, but think i'm going to have to stick with a compact

Jazzi's knowledge will certainly come in handy :)

Surely if I want to zoom in I should move it AWAY from my face... get a grip (actually, shut up, the recent posts have been useful, don't ruin it, lol)
