Is gun ownership a bit like having a big flash powerful car?
The desperate yearning to feel powerful and masculine?
To make up for some feeling of inadequacy. ............

In personal experience, i find you if you point your penis at a burglar, you seem to get a similar reaction from them as when you point a shotgun at them, they tend too run oddly enough...

    Kind of proves my point.
Either point a long dangerous weapon at them, or a gun.

Just tell them its a "fully loaded pump action" might get you somewhere. If not just a few comments about it looking "sawn off"

It's sad but true, if you are a criminal with a handful of cash you can go into any pub in a rough area right now and come out with an illegal weapon, there must be thousands out there.
The general public never knew you could legally own a pistol or rifle and they certainly didn't know about the clubs, and Police checks involved in holding a F.A.C.. That all changed after Dunblane and unfortunately law abiding people paid for the actions of a mad man just to gain a few votes.
If someone is crazy enough to want to hurt or kill a group of people, they will find a way to do it, with or without legally held weapons.
Very strange that they didn't ban one of the nastiest weapons of all, the shotgun. But I suppose that would have spoiled the fun of a lot of MPs who enjoy hunting- Can't have that, can we.....

The funny thing is, i got a shotgun licence when i was 18, and lived in the middle of a council estate, without soumding prejudiced against the "working class council estate", i wouldnt have given myself one if i was the inspector, i had no real proof of the reason i wanted one either, it was a simple case of pay £50, check my criminal record and then give me rhe authority to go into a shop and buy a 12g pump avtion tactical shotgun, which i did, luckily i did want them for genuine reasons but if id have wanted to start a new dunblame, itd of been that easy.

The thing is most of these school massacres etc are done with legally owned weapons
Just as some American kid shoots two people in his school and the kills him self today
leave the law as it is I say !

But on the same note, 98% of uk shootings are not done with legally owned weapons.

    Is say no.

The culture in this country has changed massively. We have a lot more anti social behaviour and extremist terror groups. Not one part of me would want to put a gun in my house. It would increase the risk of me being burgled and more frightening if some little yobo got his hands on it could hurt myself or my misses.

Target practise? Well I'm sure a law could be introduce to allow shooting ranges to hold firearms on site only.

The police and military are the only one who should carry as they are trained to use it when there is absolutely no other option.

I really hope that in my lifetime I don't see the law on guns change.

could that be because the amount of legally owned guns here is far less due to the laws we have in place
fact is if the law staying as it is stops 1 extra gun from making it on the black market or in the hands of some looney then I am for keeping it as it is

The point of this thread was about the fact handguns are now illegal, most people are missing one major fact, it is NOT HARD to get hold of a gun LEGALLY in this country, i myself am testimony to this, the same gun laws need to apply i agree with this, if every tom dick and harry had one things would be a living hell, but there is no reason to stop handguns from being owned legally by registerd users at a gum club. That is pointless.

There's very little crossover between the guns criminals use and legal firearms now, the only real exception being shotguns. I still have a few rifles and they'd be useless for any criminal, all but 1 of them weighs a ton and they're single shot.
The ban was a typical kneejerk response to appease idiot daily mail readers, pistol shooting was a minority sport but still enjoyed by thousands for donkeys years without incident. The members of Thomas Hamilton's gun club had reported his behaviour and their concerns to the police on a number of occasions but the police either didn't want to get involved or didn't have just cause to revoke his license and confiscate his guns.

il be honest I've only skimmed through this thread, but if people are trying to argue for making the most easily concealed deadly weapon (a handgun ) legal , then this country would have to be bonkers to even consider it
id argue that the reason for this is because the lack of availability of legal guns in the first place , every gun was legal at some point!

USA gun crime stats show over the past 5 years murders using each weapon
    Rifles 352 people per year
    Shotguns 303 people per year
    Handguns 6407 people per year
thats enough for me to want the laws we have to stay in place, just my opinion i know

and yet 1000 people a MONTH are subject to knife crime a month in london ALONE, the post was about them being removed from gun clubs ect where they were already controlled, criminals still get hold of them regardless of law, the only people it affects are genuine law abiding citizens, criminals will always find a way, no matter how many things we take off the streets.

That's were you are incorrect. Criminals can get hold of guns yes. But at the moment that not very easy as the actual number of guns is low.

Wait till every house has a gun and see how quick and easy even a spotty teenager can get hold of one.
