I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction; I had an xbox 360 that regularly suffered from RROD (except mine would show a green ring and nowt else) and had it repaired by console wizard several times. After the third instance of RROD I just replaced the unit with a new xbox 360.

My question is, how can I turn the old RROD xbox 360 into a media centre to play movies and possibly the odd game. What options are available? Can I do it myself or are there people on NWB that can mod the unit for me?

As I know it there are two types of modding, you can mod the firmware of the DVD drive so it can play backup games - that’s about the extent of that mod. That can be done to pretty much all xbox's which I have the equipment for and did mine successfully last week.

To run homebrew, run stuff off an external hdd and have custom dashboards etc you can 'jtag' your box. This involves physically modding the box by soldering some components onto it. This however, can only be done to boxes that haven’t been updated since July 2009 - if you've done an update since July then this is not an option.

However, a stock xbox can link to a windows pc and run media center so you can watch films etc streamed from your computer. Are you after playing videos solely on the xbox without the need for a pc?

    Hi Ben

The xbox 360 in question was last used in 2010 so would definitely have the update from 2009.

I'd be after playing videos soley on the xbox without connecting to a PC.

The 360 can play videos off a memory stick, or an external hard drive
It just needs to be FAT32 formatted,

Not sure if it can play them off a network hard drive, sure a google search will tell you
Hard drive you just plug directly into your router and it is stand alone, no PC required
