Zoomed in on it on my phone and its actually the back of a triangular road sign. Initially it looks like some kind of freaky alien.

I don't see why people are worried about Hardknott and Wrynose Passes. Sure, you've gotta take it easy especially on the hairpins on the way up and down but there's nothing scary about them and some glorious scenary to be had. There's loads of places to stop for bikes too. If I can negotiate the hairpins in a RWD van, it's a piece of piss on a bike!

I did it earlier in the year while 2 up, navigating 90 degree bends at a snail pace up what feels a near vertical hill with bumpy tarmac due to the fact it slides back down on itself can be quite a challenge :p I've done wrynose and hardknott in that order on a 125 and did hardknott and wrynose on the bandit. Bandit was more difficult due to the extra weight and being 2 up and there was a very strong smell of clutch lingering about once I got to the top ;)

A car/van would be miles easier, although physically bigger, you don't have to balance it if in the wrong gear

And on the picture of you all lined up, who's who? I probably spoke to most of you however briefly at some point but maybe didn't get your name or screen name but will help me out for the next time I get out with you.

Perhaps but mine is long wheel base aswell so had to swing it round on the hairpins and as such barely had any traction, was wheel spinning for fun. Was hard on the brakes dropping down on to the Boot side though. Would love to do it on the bike though, I'd actually be able to park somewhere and take the views in.

Luckily it was stood still, he looked gutted, as I would have been. Might not have been as bad but it hit the curb rather than straight to the floor so the crash bungs weren't as effective.

exactly the reason this system doesnt work for me.
The only one i have ever seen even remotely work is (as cj suggested) the 2nd man drop off. but it takes discipline.

You've got to remember aswell that some people aren't used to ride out etiquette and how these systems work, I'm not particulary. I stayed back partially for that reason so if I'd been told to mark a junction etc I didn't misunderstand and mess things up. Saying that I didn't get lost either apart form early on when most of us were a bit unsure which way to turn. I think the main grumble is the junction markers flying back past to get back to the front, sometimes quite erraticly and overtaking on twistier bits where it's harder to spot them approaching you.

I went on 3 of the Real Radio ride outs last year and all of them suffered from the same thing although they slowly got better as they progressed. First one half the group got lost as no marking, second one was marshalled properly but still some got lost and markers were whizzing past back to the front. I think the drop off system is the best way, and if used well, you'll soon be back at the front anyway!

this is how the drop off system works http://www.gwent-advanced-motorists.org/bikes/drop_off.htm

if the new to group riding peeps take note of it and also self discipline...there is no reason why any group should break up. the key word is discipline most new riders to the system are scared to stop incase they think they will get lost with the rider behind them not showing up etc.. it takes a couple of rides to get it correct as where to pull up etc, but once sorted the whole group benefits
