I have recently been reading a lot about group selection at track days, so I have a question. 1) What process do you go through to select your appropriate group? I am really interested in the decision with regards to moving up a group.
hiya sean, if your ACU,not first year novice, you should really be fast group....if your lapping Oulton park around the 1.59-2 mins area this is fast group time. when i first started doing them , i would time the groups ahead of me and then time myself,if was lapping in my group at the avarage times of the group above, id ask to be moved up . its a very valid question, some riders just say they are fast group for image rights!!! fast group riders from Oulton, wont automatically be a fast group rider at cadwell, you need to learn the tracks before moving up , id say a min of 6 or 7 visits to the same track before moving up and even then as mentioned , the times need to be within that group
depends on how well i know the track, if i haven't been before i will normally go in inters and see how it goes. when i do go in the fast i tend to run with the slower riders of the fast group. i do find it alot safer in the fast group.
Id still enter myself if novice group even with having my ACU license, the fast lads are FAST and have experience on the circuit. Once you have 5-6 days under your belt id move to inters, if your quickest in that group then move to fast. They key to being quick is knowing the track if you dont know where you are or whats next things can go wrong really quick. You never know if you enter novice and are quicker than everyone you'll be moved to inters for saftey reasons anyway!
i done 5 track day all together, 4 @ oulton and 1 @ donington park, i am doing 2:07 @ oulton in inters and first time i did 2:03 in novice @ donington i should moved upto inter as crash out in afternoon (highside at old hairpin ) i was trying to do the 2 min but in loads of traffic my fault, not put me off will back just fixing my bike up, will back @ oulton and want do cadwell aswell , if you pass loads and lapping people move up a group it safer as every going same lap times
