i remember a lad on the ktm forum using a brand new 690sm as a donor bike. good reliable engine. about 65bhp as standard. not many nocking about though, hence him buying a new bike to rip apart!

You lucky git... that would be cool...

Does it have to be a single? I love the thought of a super mono racing bike... but I went onto a stand at the bike show last year and found what must now be one of my dream (but realistic) bikes... RRV450... YES PLEASE!...

Starts as an SXV450 I believe... so I doubt it'll be maintenance free... but having sat on it I couldn't believe how light it was, and the thing was beautiful... Even nicer than an RS250, and I feel angry at myself for using those words!!

What are your goals with it? Fast, nice looking, reliable?... are you looking to race or just have fun?

    Best of luck

My main aim is just something to have fun on. I only have a small budget I was thinking a knackerd mito or rs then bigger engine suspension and brakes. Just wondering what engines would go in without to many mods to the chassis?

Ok heres the thing mate if you want to race it there are series popping up everywhere & they are the future however theres a cheaper way & with loads of kits available go and buy any 450 mx 4 stroke bike.

You remove the tank, handle bars and risers. Alter the sub frame, add clip ons, drop the yolks slightly on the forks & get the suspension re valved etc. Change the sprockets & chain, Buy a set of wheels.

Buy a set of RS 250 race fairings and a tank & away you go.

Paul owen is racing one very succesfully, Im thinking about getting one done my self as they are a propper hoot.

If you use your loaf it can all be done for less than £1500 plus the cost of the donar bike.

go on jimbo, im having a go - right !?

Would love an rs125 chassis with a 'Berg 650 engine in it (but chain is on wrong side for starters). something along those lines methinks ... projects are never 'cheap' though !!

hows about we fit craigs tuono engine onto this bloody go kart chassis ive got lying around in my garage ?! ;)

If you're on a smaller budget, the single MX engines would put me off, because they require so much maintenance...

I had a CRF450 for a while, and the maintenance schedule was STUPID!... and if they go they are very expensive to repair.. that's the main reason I got rid of it in the end (amazing bit of kit, don't get me wrong, but too much to keep going when it was only a toy... they're a full on competition bike)

I have an SZR660 on the road... in case you're not familiar they are basically a factory produced (though designed by italians, and it shows in some areas, lol) tzr250 frame with an XTZ660 engine...

They're nothing like as pretty as some of the above mentioned ideas, and won't handle quite as sweet... the engine won't be such an animal... but they're cheap, easy to get parts (nothing 'one off'), and have an unstressed 660 rather than a tuned 450 which produce similar power (my mate had a 450 'berg, and my szr660 was very similar performance... but with none of the service worries... the proof in the pudding is that I'm still using the yami and my mates 'berg put it's piston through the front of his engine.. ouch!)...

You could get an szr for less than a grand (I gave less than a grand for mine)... spend your spare cash putting twin discs on it (they are a TZR wheel and forks, and so have the fittings for the 2nd disc)... upgrade the rear suspension (I'd suspect it being a little soft for track as standard)... and it'll be much much cheaper and far more reliable...But it's not as pretty or desirable... hmmmm...

I read this when I was doing the usual internet trawl before buying a bike...
It is an SZR660 against a Bimota BB1 - Bimota's 'race rep' super mono which should kick ass... the SZR got plenty of praise... Intersting read I recon http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_szr660%2095.htm

Having raced 4 stroke mx bikes for years I have to disagree they are a peice of p*ss to look after and won't let you down if you do.

Regular oil and filter changes £20 with oil, change the piston and rings every 60 hours £160. Valve shims £2 check them every 20 hours.

It only becomes expensive if you don't do the maintenance and I would have to say that if you thrash any single cylinder bike you have to do the maintenance as they will let go if you don't.

Think I'm gona go for the szr the 450 mx sounds tempting but to much hassle I've got kx250 and its a nightmare something goes wrong with it every time I use it lol thanks for the advice everyone ill keep u updated on how its going

Jim the 250 is a nightmare because in essence there a 125 replacement and are gutless so you rev the tits of them, just do your homework before commiting to any one bike.

If it were me I would be looking at any ktm 520 or 525 as a donar bike.

They have white power suspension that will need nothing doing to it
The chasis can be played around with ease
The exhaust systems are awesome & need nothing
They do not need shims as they are mechanical valve adjustment
    They are very fast
The parts are very cheap in comparison
They dont break as easy as others

But hey thats just my opinion, as I say Jim do your home work

How much can you get a Ducati Supermono for these days?

Ooh that's nice... Never seen those before... But checked on wiki and the last 2 sentences make me think they'll be quite hard to come by at all, never mind cheap. Gutting! Nice looking thing, cheers for bringing it up

"The Ducati Supermono is a lightweight, single-cylinder racing motorcycle made by Ducati. It is named for the Supermono racing class. The Supermono is arguably one of the most collectable Ducatis in any era. Only 65 Supermonos were built by Ducati between 1993 and 1995."

WOW Jobs allready done, I wouldnt mess about Id have thet revbox back on there, remove the road stuff & dash & fit a Stack Stack Rev counter wich runs straight of the plug, I would fit a HM Quickshifter, race fairings & have a track bike that would embarrass most race & Road bikes at any track day.
