s some of you know me and cat rode to fort william last summer and had a right blast....the weather was pretty good and the roads were absolutley amazing, truely what biking dreams are made of... well we're gonna go again this year, its a monday to friday trip with 1 night in moniaeve, 2 nights in fort william then a night in moniaeve again on the way back....beers each night in local pubs and maybe a ride from fort william to skye or mull and back on the wednesday we're thinking of July/Augusts but that open yet. it's a brilliant ride with the best roads in the UK (a82 is 90 miles of biking bliss) anybody fancy it? here is the route http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&sourc ... 00378&z=11
I'm hoping to get up there with my Dad this spring.. few routes planned but all centre from Oban. looks a nice run that!
Yeah the road from Oban to fort william is amazing if you go via Glen Coe. Great road and what a place to ride rain or shine. I went in july and forgot my water proof and was freezing and wet but worth every bit of it.
Would love to come on this, will need to check rota closer to the date! Quality that road sounds like fun!
yeah cool tom. come on guys its a brilliant ride, its a cheap holiday (i can even arrange camping for you if you'd prefer to slum it) with the best roads (empty as well) you can ride on without going across the water and if there was a few of us it would rock.
Just wanted to update you that we're going the 27th July...returning home on the 31st....as the first post said its a B+B in moniaive on monday night with a choice of b+b or camping (if your tough) in fortwilliam tuesday and wednesday night with the reverse trip starting thursday back to the b+b. On the wednesday we can either climb ben nevis, ride to either skye or mull...or just have a day off getting pissed. As i've said before if you're a new or slower rider than some guys on here don't be worried....i'll be leading and will mostly stick to the speed limits so this is a brilliant opportunity for your first 'tour'. thats not to say it wont be fun and if you are a fast rider i promise you there are no better roads in the UK...and some very long so as usual you can always wait for us up ahead. it will be a great week, we loved it last year and it would be great if any of you could make the trip with us.
Our owners club are having a weekender at the beinglas campsite Nr Loch Lomond September 12th- 14th http://www.beinglascampsite.co.uk/ Back in 2006 I went touring for a week based my self at the Red Squirral campsite at Glencoe http://www.redsquirrelcampsite.com/index.html,absolutly awesome, and they allow open fires if you havnt been to Scotland yet I recommend you do so
sorry cant make this one tt till mid june some of the best roads up there  LOCATION OF SPEED CAMERAS IN SCOTLAND In the North there are plenty of cameras along the dangerous top end of Loch Ness side, the A82, and around the corner from Inverness to Elgin. The strip from Spean Bridge near Fort William up as far as Grantown on Spey carries intermittent cameras.. Just as you emerge from the traffic craWl around one of the most beautiful winding roads in the world, alongside Loch Lomond, where you have spent 30 painful minutes behind a caravan, you can open up and pass as you go up the long straight hill to Crianlarich. Bang, there is a speed camera there, just for you. Driving on towards Oban, there is one mobile camera unit just past Tyndrum. Dangerous road though.
Great stuff Andy! I've just been up to Scotland on a road trip (car) with a good friend of mine and gone all the way up that way and over to the Outer Hebredes. The Isle of Harris is absolutely epic, though a bit tough on your timescale. If you're thinking of heading over to Mull or Skye, I'd suggest Mull. You'll have to get a ferry but it's a much more interesting island IMO, with single track roads across pretty dramatic and changing scenery. If you can make it as well, the very best roads on the mainland are slightly further North around Ullapool, though as you say the roads up from Loch Lomond to Fort William are also pretty awesome. On your way back, a great place to stop is Pitlochry. You'd have to head back East of Glasgow but it's only a minor diversion, and is crammed full of really nice pubs/restaurants/hotels. Beautiful village. Anyway, enough jabber. Wish I could come as I'd love to do it on the bike but I'll be a good 10000 miles away by then. But I do hope some take you up on it as it'll be pretty damn enjoyable I'm sure.
My neck of the woods andy! mother in law lives in monieve, good run from there up to kilmarnock. can i suggest missing out the m77 and heading through stewarton (my home town) and taking the b769 to newton mearns where you then pick up the 77 again. its a 10 mile roller coaster, was once in ride magazine for one of the top 10 roads in uk. be carefull it can catch you out, and the locals fly down it! the 82 is excellant up through glen coe, plenty of bikers up there as well. ive also been up the A87 (?) to skye another belter! I'll be up there mid-late august, hopefully on the bike, i'll keep an eye on the thread and tag along for a day if the dates fit, otherwise enjoy!
Why don't you go further up on the first night and stay around Arrochar (left at Tarbet) just past Loch Lomond, easily done in one day. Then the second day over the Glen Coe through Fort William up to Fort Augustus and along Loch Ness to Drumnadrocit roads are even better, plus you have more areas to go and play. You could also cross over to Pitlochry on the way down turning at Spean Bridge more great roads it also takes you past Dalwhinnie the whisky distillery and you then finnish up on the A9 just above Pitlochry. We stayed in a hostel and it was great full of hippies.
I think they were something like 35-45 PPPN....obviously if you decide to camp its much cheaper but i only know a camping place in fort william, moniave is very small so the B+B is the best option mate.
B&B in Scotland on average is about £35 pppn, why don't you stay at the back packers hostels there not like they use to be and are more reasonable. There is one in Fort William right in the middle of town. You can get a dorm bedroom if you wanted that sleeps up to 12 people from £13 a night pp. Worth looking at and gives you more money to spend on ale. Plus if you book in advance there is no rush to get there. If you do choose B&B it can be difficult to get them close together if there is a lot of you. Coolio  You can have just single and double rooms as well if you wanted. I just thought if there where a lot of you it might be better if you where all together, if you wanted to be.
