Just thought I would share my new setup for a bike satnav ready for my France trip next year

I started with buying a plug and play wiring loom which is a switched live from the brake light
    [IMG]

Then after realising that the USB I had bought would only put my satnav into computer mode I bought a ciggy lighter

Then came the problem of placing the ciggy lighter as most of the front end of blade is sloped I decided to make a bracket and attach it under my new ram mount (see website)

So after tyding up the wiring it looked like this

I attached it to the bracket with velcro for a stable attachment then put together all my rammount parts

    For this finished product

All the parts not including satnav came in at about £80 the ram mount bits I'm well impressed with the whole setup can articulate off 4 different points for the perfect viewing

    And that's about it

    +1
By properly researching the route and understanding it. Having clear way points and an image of the road network you will pass though in your head.

at 70 mph I'm enjoying the road ahead , this means being focused on that road and the surroundings,,NOT some shat nav distracting my ride…i will have a real good idea of the way I'm going and the road signs will confirm that , most "oldies" only use the map en route when there is a conflict of something like a diversion ..must admit we do take sat nags on the trip but they are only used for directions to the hotel from the ring road of the city ,,,IE we are staying on a certain road in the main barcelona town, so we programme the hotel in and when we are on the outskirts of the city we tune in …

is your ram mount the type with a rubber bung that's compressed as you tighten it up ?. I had mine vibrate out at 70mph + on a ride and somehow managed to catch the full unit including shat nav as it left the bike with my left hand. Id recommend a bit of Silicone added to the bung.

If you use your satnav properly you'll find it better than a map. I've planned routes where everyone's like, where the fucks he going! I try and avoid major towns and cities unless wanting to stop there, turning off a few miles before and popping out the other side. And when you plan the route you end up memorising the roads and towns.. The unit is there as a bit of a backup, you only need to glance at the countdown to turn and then eyes up again. Join the 21st century guys. Mines mounted not far off eye line anyway, above the clocks.

Must admit, i do this as well, gps mounted above the clocks at eye level, even if i know a route well i take my Gps, as it updates me on the fly of any accidents, any road works, any unexpected change to road surface and traffic jams upcoming ect. I plan a route beforehand and use a gps as reference if worst comes to worst. Not a great idea to just follow a gps blindly though, as has already been stated you arent giving the road your full concentration.

Completely agree that's why I bought a satnav with a 3.5mm jack plug so I can plug my headphones in I won't even need to look at it tbh

Just because we have Velcro now, doesn't mean we shouldn't tie our shoes.
