Yeah the white is ridiculously thin. It's like spraying thinners lol. Very easy to get runs and needs a LOT of coats to get a good opaque coverage, hence why it makes more sense to spray a couple of coats of grey as a base coat.

In terms of quantity of PlastiDip, I probably had enough white if I'd done it all perfectly but given I'm having to redo an air scoop and that when I did the pillion hump I only used white (no grey base coat so many, many coats of white lol) I'll probably have to buy another can.

I have 2 (and a little bit) cans of white left and still have the following to paint white:
    • RHS air scoop
    • Tank
    • Nose fairing
    • LHS mid-fairing
    • Tail fairing
    • Front mudguard
Have also got the bellypan to paint black.

I find the black just fine. Black is the thickest I've found so far. You can change the texture of the PlastiDip by varying the distance you spray at and how thick you put it on - further away gives the PlastiDip time to part-cure in the air before hitting the panel, making it more textured, and thinner coats do the same. Spraying thicker, wetter coats from closer result in a smoother finish. I did thinner coats sprayed from further away when I did a test run on the centre console for my BMW because the factory OEM finish is textured and it came out almost perfect:

    However...

..once you get a couple of coats on and it has chance to dry... [IMG]

In contrast, when I painted the nose fairing's deflectors black I sprayed closer and heavier to get a smoother finish:

(these look as bad as they do because the previous owner had put stickers on them that left some horrible nigh-n indestructible glue behind so I had to use acetone to remove it, which also took off the factory black paint and (I think) possibly the top layer of plastic lol :roflmao: ).

Well I fitted the twin carbon cans to the Tuono instead. Couldn't resist :p
Looks like I didn't get all the glue off the RHS air scoop before I slapped the PlastiDip on. Oh well I guess that's what you get for doing a quick and dirty spray job lol.

Gives me a chance to try peeling off the PlastiDip though. Pretty tough, if I'm being honest. Finally got an edge free then started to pullllllll.....

Next lot of bits just finished and drying.

Getting there slowly. Had to order another 3 aerosols (1 black 2 white). Turning out quite pricey to use aerosols lol so if I had to do it again I'd use a compressor and spray gun then just order the 5 litre pots of PlastiDip lolz.

Getting close to finishing with the painting - all I have left to paint is the LHS half of the bellypan and the hugger. Then I just have to reassemble everything (!)

I decided to stop updating this thread until it was done to avoid it just being "one coat" "two coats" "three coats" "four coats" pictures lol and it getting a bit repetitive.

Anyway, am getting there slowly. Am building a stash of rubbery panels in my junk room lol

I bought a litre of the pre-thinned stuff from matt-pack a few weeks ago, with a cheapie ebay HVLP gun, intending to do my Varadero with it. Aerosol cans are definitely easier, but the spray able stuff was a lot cheaper.

    Time for a little update.

    Getting there....

The bike now looks like this:

The final bit of bodywork to come off was the tank, which had to be drained (fun job - not). Did that today and got the paint on.

Also put together the front end, which looks a lot better now built up :)

Just need to apply some stickers, the Stompgrips and tank protector, then refit everything :)

Well it's been, errr.... fun. Honest [IMG]

Last of the painting is done, stickers are on (except a couple of small ones I'm waiting on) and she's back in one piece.

I'm waiting on a small red and white "RSVMille" sticker for the nose cone and a pair of red and white "V60" stickers for the tail, then that's pretty much it.

I do have the black Stompgrips but am reluctant to fit them as I think they'll ruin the look of the bike. I probably will but for the moment I'm just enjoying it without them [IMG]

Learning to use PlastiDip has been an experience. It's a helluva lot easier than normal paint but it does have certain limitations. Total cost for PlastiDip on this project is I reckon about £180 (that includes enough to give plenty of coats and a pearl top coat).

Hope you like the pics [IMG]
