Retrofitting ABS....

    Looking at my front forks and calipers, I noticed the left is different than the right.. See pics,

    Would I be correct in guessing this is for the ABS sensor (available on my model Z1000 in other territories) and if I get the required bits I can add ABS to the front?

    As the z1000 comes with ABS in other territories would I need a new ECU or just a fuse to bridge the connection?

    sensor, abs unit, new brake lines to run to and from abs unit and probably an abs ecu.

    oh and wiring as well.

    I'm no expert, but the first thing I've noticed about ABS bikes is this:

    Every bike I've ever seen with ABS has the smaller disc, with the holes in it.

    I believe the device that will mount on your forks operates by sensing the breaks in the rotating disc, and is therefore able to see when the 'breaks' (Not sure if magnetic or light triggered) slow down too quickly - that triggers the ABS to kick in as the wheel is about to lock up.

    (Yes I do mean 'breaks' - I'm not spelling 'Brakes' wrong).

    That is my understanding of it - and I'm no expert. I'm welcome to somebody to prove me wrong.

    A full ABS system is pretty complicated:

    So my guess is no, you can't just buy this part and have ABS. More than likely you'd need a new ECU (or a software update) - a bunch of cables & circuitry and it would probably be a massive pain in the ass. Not sure if you can buy the ABS rings or if they're part of the rotor - in which case that is new rotors.

    Definitely possible...but I think it'd be problematic.

    Ecu brake pump amongst.other parts as when you slam on the ecu controls the pump to release and grab very fast

    I know about the disc, that would come under parts, with the abs sensor and wire's. Just wondering if I can be done

    The abs z1 is around £1000 more than the std rob .....lil day's post explains the difference in the price and it's justifiable ....now stop dreaming and ride the Fuka !

    Those slotted rings are also used for traction control systems, i have them front and rear on the TV4, i have no abs.

    The device you say is called an Optical Encoder, There will be a photo transistor (Think of an LED, and a Sensor that detects when it can see the LED) and a computer will calculate the speed of the wheel by how many times the led flickers on/off as the black part of the disc covers the sensor. The same things are used in printers so they know the position of the paper.

    Nope it's a magnetic based system due to the possibility of damage to the sensor, a magnet still works when it's dirty.
    You can just imagine the fun you'd have if the LED got obscured on an ABS system.:confused:

    Lister it would be cheaper to PX your bike for a new one with ABS fitted than buy and fit all the required hardware.

    The ABS system will be linked into the speed sensor this prevents the ABS from locking the wheel as the ABS senses that the bike is still moving which means that the wheel should still be rotating.
    Early ABS systems would lock the wheel on and off quickly this is not a desirable system on a bike. But linked with the bikes speed means it can keep the wheel rotating.
    In an ideal world the ABS would be fully integrated into the ECU so when panic braking it could sense the amount of pressure required to just stop the wheel from locking at any speed, it could also work to shut the fuel down and retard the timing to enable the engine to take some of the strain and help the rear remain on the road, but then again maybe some do.:)

    Even though I have a X reg van the ABS cuts the fuel if you try left foot braking, bit of a pain on roundabouts.:D

    Ah, I stand corrected. I'm guessing some sort of Hall effect sensor I'm guessing then ?

    That was my thought, just like a computer hard drive (magnetic field is 1's or 0s as the platter rotates).

    That is actually really interesting. Brake dust and road film would mess up an optical sensor in no time.

    Maybe I'm just sad.

    I CAN DO SCIENCE ME!

    Oh and Rob stop cheating. If you want some abs you'll have to go the gym...no two ways about it!

    Sounds like a lot of messing about to me, carry a mawhosive anchor and failing that jump for the nearest lamp post in a leaping monkey fashion

    Another thing to check is, have Kawasaki put anything else where the ABS would go. On my old BMW I put in an aux battery where the Abs would go. Great camping mod at rallies or tent touring. Run the aux battery flat in the evening and re-charge it on the next days run. Far better use of the space in my opinion.
