been toying with this idea for a bit.
love my R1, but find the riding position crap in traffic / town.

thought of chopping it in and buying something like a tuono. but dont really have the money (id want an 06 onwards one and id be looking at about a grand plus the R1)
plus like i say, i do really love everything else about the bike.

i was considering a streetfighter conversion of it. but i like the protection the fairings give (both to the bike and on the motorway to me)

seen these and wondering what people reckon? http://www.topyokes.com/comfort_kit_+_handlebars/499

also on a bike in the mcn http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/bikes-for-sale/searchresults/detail/Yamaha/R1/2008/_/R-NXGN-2132424

    hmmmm.

I seen an R1 at Southport early this year with straight bars, and the rider said it was comfortable but they was close to the fairing when on full lock, I was thinking of buying Barney Rubble R1 and putting straight bars on it as he already did this when he converted it to the R1-N

yeah, on the 04 - 06 model (mine) they reckon you have to re-profile the fairing to get full lock. was going to keep an eye out for a spare one on ebay.

Barney Rubble just saod his R1 and told me he still have the Top Yoke, bars and cables in his garage, so give him a PM and see if he will sell them to you.

That's because your bike wants to tear your arms of an hit you with the soggy ends whilst punching you in the bollox for good measure :D

I reckon it's a good idea , but then I'm biased 'cos I've done something similar to my bike ( not an R1 btw )

You won't be sorry once you ride it this way .........

On mine I had to change all my cables ( throttle , clutch ) and brake lines to longer ones and chop my screen a little bit ( in fact just changed my screen to a Double Bubble which I've had to chop ) ........... so just bear all that in mind

Here's a couple of before and after shots :shades:

The master cylinder would hit the edge of the screen and stop the bars going to full lock , so it had to be trimmed

    Go for it :goodjob:

would suit R1 better if you put gay bars on it!

Personally, I'd avoid doing anything that's irreversible as it would make it more difficult to sell and potentially devalue it a fair amount. If you're going to keep it for good, or you aren't bothered about depreciation, then go for it.

Even so, as someone who appreciates the appeal of high bars, I must say they look very out of place on fully faired sports bikes. Never seen a good conversion that wasn't a streetfighter. And most of those are pretty tasteless.

yeah i appreciate what your saying.
ive sorted with barney rubble to get a 2nd yoke with bars, brake lines, throttle assy etc that he had on his fighter (which personally i thought looked great).

im keeping my eye out for a 2nd hand fairing upper, that i can modify if i need to. if it looks sh*t, but i like the riding position, then its getting the streetfighter treatment.

like this, but may try to find the headlight off a fz1-n

That's not bad. An FZ light would indeed be better.

Best modern streetfighter I've seen by far:
