Spent most of today getting my r6 race slag back to its former glory, but think I've come across a problem. I checked the oil cap and noticed a little white stuff on the inside ( fuckin great! Head gasket). So I took the radiator cap off (when cold obviously) and started the bike up, after a few minutes of warming and blipping the throttle I'm getting bubbles in the radiator! Doh!! I'm actually hoping it is the head gasket and not a cracked head. I no in colder months your more likely to get a bit of white stuff on the oil cap, but it's the bubbles in the rad that pretty much confim its pressuring from somewhere. Questions Has anybody had the same problem? How much to get the head gasket done? Cheers Ric 2000 r6
Do the simple stuff first. Get the coolant checked for monoxide. No monoxide and the combustion chambers are tight.
Couldn't agree more, a sniff test will tell you straight away if there's any hydrocarbons present in the coolant. Would you not do the work yourself? Pretty straight forward if the head isn't cracked or warped.
Yeah I've just bin thinking about doin the gasket myself, but if the heads cracked I'd be waisting my time. How much would a garage charge dya think?
You'd need an MOT station to stick their exhaust probe in your rad to detect the presence of exhaust hydrocarbons, however if you've got 'Mayo' (the white stuff) this is usually a sign of emulsified oil (oil and coolant mixing) which might not show on the sniff test..
Might also be worth checking the water pump seal. Easiest way to check is if the coolant level goes up and oil level drops when you start the bike. Is the coolant a grey colour?
That could just be condensation in the engine oil. A good run and the mositure will evapourate if you don't have a leak. This is why I ride air cooled bikes.
could just be condensation, run it up to temp and see how it goes or get hold of one of the tubes/bungs with the blue fluid in (can't for the life of me remember what they are called??) (christ i'm a retard sometimes!!) a block test kit stick it in the rad/expansion tank cap filler and run it up, that'll tell you if it's a gasket/crack. worth getting a leakdown test done if you're still unsure.
if its not been run lately there will be white stuff on the oil cap i've had it on numerouse bikes its down to condensation once the engine is warmed up it goes
There ae several ways a Head Gasket can fail although it's VERY rare the Gasket 'itself' fails, it's usually the result of another problem causing it to fail.... This may help explain things a little better... http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairinfo/common/repairInfoMain.jsp?targetPage=productsHowToInspect&leftNavPage=productsHowTo&pageId=%090996b43f80a01231&subtitle=inspect
Well I'm stud here in garage brew in hand effin freezin! Bikes upto 80 and the mayo has pretty much gone, but it's these bubbles that are worrying me a bit. Think your right about a leak test.
a block test kit stick it in the rad/expansion tank cap filler and run it up, that'll tell you if it's a gasket/crack. Bloke What will happen if its gasket/crack? Will it pop off?
hold on...it's one of these...http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-BLOCK-TESTER-KIT-FOR-GASKETS-CYLINDER-HEADS-BT500-/130795884806?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item1e740ad106 combustion gasses turn the fluid yellow, ish.
No pipes off, but the last time the bike was run properly in was doin summer salts at anglesey after an off. So I'm thinkin maybe air in system? ( wouldn't really explain boubles when you rev, or water rising when it's getting hot)
Water pressure increases along with temperature (it's why you have an expansion bottle) so the water level will rise a little as it gets hotter. As said above, give it a good run then check for any coolant loss or mayo in the oil again.
