I'm just thinking this through will not be doing it until after christmas, but i think i am going to stick a 2005 engine in my cg which means ill be going from points and kick start to CDI and electric start how much wiring is this and will it be hard? i have an electrician in the family who said he can do it if i have a electrical diagram which i do as i have the haynes. Is it going to be a simple transition, will my carb just go on will the clutch cable just go straight on, sorry for amateur questions but this will be one of my first mechanical ventures and its gonna be a biggy hahaha Any feedback would be good thanks, as i say around Jan is when i plan to do this.
crumbs mate ..thats a big job swapping engines over for your first project !!! you need to check that the engine mounts are in the same place etc ..if it was me with no experience i think i would be asking for the a proper techinican to tackle this …..wont be as straight forward as you think
I have absolutely no Idea, but I wish you good luck, if you decide to do this. I am sure there will be people here who have a much better understanding, but it does sound a big first project.
Not 100% on this, but would it not be easier to just add a new loom? As i assume all the other things, ie:indicators, brake lights and headlights are all the same.
I'd just buy a full loom from eBay, would probably be about £20-£30 for a cg. When the loom is out of the bike you can check all the connections and make sure it's all in good nick. is your cg now 6 Volts ? I would think an electric start engine would be 12 Volts, so then you'd have to swap all bulbs etc Swapping the engines in a CG should be fairly easy with a bit of mechanical competence, your Haynes manual will tell you how to drop it, the clutch cable and throttle cables should just go back in, but you will have to put the throttle cable on new slides (depending on what carbs the cg has), it'd just be a case of pulling all the old cg bits off and putting new bits on.
What's wrong with the current engine? I thought it had dragged FatBob up from Stoke or similar and he sang its' praises. No?
Really a waste of time and money. Don't spend too much time/energy on a 125 as it's just a stepping stone until you pass your test. If you reallllly need to do it sell yours and buy a 2005 model, the difference will be the same as what the project would cost you.
As said above, there will be loom and wiring differences, you'll need a CDI unit, etc. Both should be 12v, my old CG125 Brazil model (1985 / 86) was 12 volt but kick start. Think that was CDI not points but not sure as at that point I went to a dealer as had no mechanical capability. Mechanically the sprockets, mounts, exhaust, carb, cables, etc should all match up.
Thats what i was thinking it sounds like the only hard part would be wiring the cdi and electric start but i know a couple of people who could help me do that
It would be a massive pain in the arse to wire in the electric start and CDI as an ad-on to your existing loom. You could buy a new one with all the connectors already in for about £20 and just swap the looms over, Would be 100 times easier .
