Having snapped two chisels and melted several drill bits trying to remove the Cat from the stock Aprilia cans (getting nowhere), frustration got the better of me and I took a trip to Pipe Worx in Burscough on Friday. I came back with a shiny pair of these 'Hawk' GP cans for the Tuono: They're very well made, look great, and are much lighter than stock, and a third the price of the cheapest akras. They are also quite embarassingly, conspicuously, almost shamefully loud, as Andyb, Cat & Lou will attest. Ear plugs are on order.
video clip please! look really nice. first set ive seen on a touno (or rsv) that are properly aligned. even the akras tend to be off a bit. good man. mine are coming to work tonight to get the race baffle treatment.
Thanks Lee. I did try a video but the noise was too much for the tiny mic in my camera and all you can hear is a distorted crackle. It's fairly easy to get the alignment wrong as there are two swivel points on the link pipes. Akras are a little easier as they're sprung at both joins, so you can just line the springs up. Still difficult to get it perfect. With these kinds of cans (which clamp onto the link pipe), it's important to get it exactly right before tightening everything up, or it'll end up lop sided. Took me a few minutes until I was satisfied they were pretty well lined up, but these aren't quite 100% perfect. Good enough for now, though Look forward to seeing the result. Do you have a cat to remove with the R1 cans, or is it just the core?
the cat is in the y pipe before the cans, so im leaving that for now. just gutting the stock baffles for race ones. i was amazed at how light the original ones actually are as standard. the full system on the R1 is titanium from the factory. pics and report to follow
going to nip to mco this week to have a little look at a couple of tuonos. got 5 grand to blow on the credit card! was talking to the mrs and said id probably really miss the R1. she said keep it and get rid of the old cbr! what a woman!
LMFAO oooo you gave up far to quickly :big_boss: !!! Never mind the new ones look way better NEVER EVER LOUD ENOUGH
nice !very very nice :icecream: do you run all the time without wing mirrors ? how do you find it ? f*ck me its bloody clean aswell,i pride myself on a tiptop bike, but that takes some beeting. im most impressed.
Thanks Mike. I only tend to bother with the mirrors when it comes to group rides with a few people out. Turning around all the time to see whether people are still behind can be a bit of a pain. For that reason, I'll probably stick them on for the ring trip. In terms of solo riding, I don't miss them at all. For one, they aren't the best mirrors in the world (not Ducati useless, but far from your typical Honda standard), and tend to blur a little with vibration. More generally, I tend to find I'm lazier with mirrors and don't do lifesavers quite as often as I should. Without the mirrors I have no choice. A quick turn of the head on the motorway is easy enough when changing lanes, and much less of a strain on a sit up bike than it is sports bike with low clip ons. Other than that, I tend to be far more interested in what is up ahead. That was then, this is now. There's no point living in the past. As for cleaning: I do like to keep it as clean as possible, especially as it's an everyday bike and and not just a dry weather toy. But I'm not fanatical either: I'd rather get out riding than spend hours cleaning the chain with a toothbrush, for instance. Keep on top of it, though, and it's easy enough to keep clean.
From memory, the oval cans Rod has are pretty noisy, but these are quite a bit louder still. Sounds absolutely awesome, but maybe too loud really, especially through town. Sure I can live with it, though
