I'm unsure which method to use, i have an exhaust header bolt which has sheared off on the bandit and the previous owner has kindly ground the stud flush with the head, now i realise that the original bolts are mild cheese and was thinking of using a stud extractor kit, but my concern is over how well seized the stud was in the first place ( which caused the stud to shear ). I don't want to end up snapping the extremely hard but brittle extractor tool inside the drilled out stud, thus leaving me in a whole different world of trouble. Or should i just go straight down the road of completely drill out the old thread and stud and put a 'Helicoil' in and be done with. Any advice would appreciated,:thumbsup:
i would try the easy out first lee as you drill a 4mm bit in a 6mm stud and lots of wd40 and maybe a bitor heat and jobs a good one last resort is the heli coil mate
Left handed drill, I've just got couple to do mine with. Or drill through with a 3 mm bit then pump some wd40 in and leave, heat and cool with wd40 drill out a bit bigger should be no problem using a helicoil if fitted correctly or even a threaded insert. When you have drilled the stud out to around 4mm there is another trick to try, a file! Best if it's a broken file use the tang (handle end) and hammer into the hole in the stud good pair of grips on the file and you might get lucky. The tang of the file is softer than the main part but still hard enough to grip so shouldn't snap.
Swearing is obligatory. I've made up a few new expletives in the heat of a good rant. (Well they seemed good at the time, but on reflection I may not use them again) .
I definately wouldn't use WD-40, you need a penetrating fluid. Plus-Gas is amazing stuff. I have seen it work wonders on red rusty tractor bolts. There is a utube vid showing how to extract a bolt with a left hand drill bit called: Remove a broken bolt using a left handed drill bit If I was clever, that would be a hyperlink
Found a bit of info about release fluids and the new kid on the block seems to be a mixture of ATF (Automatic transmission fluid) and acetone. I will be trying it when I get hold of some acetone and report back.
just ordered a set of lefty drills, will report back on progress once i get chance to do the job.:thumbsup:
Nail varnish remover has various additives, perfume, oils, etc. I checked in Boots yesterday at price £1 for 200ml not cheap compared to what I got and it's pure no additives.
