Martin "Benny Vee VTR" Leyland tagging contest trophy, or funeral t-shirts?

A few people have mooted the idea of having t-shirts printed for Martin's funeral (photo on the front, "Ride In Paradise", etc.). Printed t-shirts like this would probably cost around a tenner per person.

As an alternative, I've suggested that rather than people paying a tenner to buy a t-shirt they'll only use once, those people donate that money instead to an account from which a Northwestbikers Tagging Contest trophy is purchased, with the remaining funds then being donated to the Air Ambulance (a service who more than likely saved Erika's life, by airlifting her to hospital after the crash).

Anyone who knew Martin knew that there was nothing he loved more than a random hoon, especially a nighttime hoon and one that got him a good distance from home and on which he found new bike-friendly roads and locations. Although I don't believe he particularly participated in the Tagging Contest, the whole point of the NWB Tagging Contest is that it inspires people to get out of their comfort zone and get some miles under their belts, taking them on new roads and to new places, and sometimes at utterly random times (I roll my eyes when I remember riding through the Peak District to Holmfirth at 2am one foggy March night to capture a tag...). I believe this inspires in us the spirit that Benny already had firmly within him, and I for one think it would be a fitting memorial to him to have a trophy named after him like this. My thoughts would be that the Tagging Contest would run it's normal duration and when the Contest closes the results aren't announced immediately, instead being saved to be announced at an NWB Christmas meal/night out, along with the presentation of the trophy at that time.

I'd also suggest that it might be nice to have a little prize fund for the Tagging Contest, to represent a tank of fuel for the road, so an additional suggestion I'll make is that anyone taking part in the Tagging Contest donates £1 to a "prize fund"...?

I was thinking of something like this:

Err, I disagree slightly with this sentence! Martin loved getting out on his bike, the reason most of his hoons were random is that he had absolutely no idea where he was going or where he was!

    Lol that's exactly what I mean :p

He was more concerned about getting out there than just getting from A to B...

I hear you, Smudger - only issue then is that we have to set up and manage some sort of voting system for a "Tag of the year". I'll discuss it with Chucky though as I know there are some budding photographers on here and I've been thinking that we could do with some sort of "bike/photo of the month" thing, and it'd fit better in that sort of arrangement....

I think having a Trophy with his name on it that could be awarded yearly would be a top idea - nice thought

Could we not get a VTR model and mount it on a base - engrave his name in the base or something and use that as the trophy? I didn't know him, but heard him on the forum enough times saying how much he loved his bike!

well we need need a staff mem willing to give there time to create a new thread with every single tag put to a thumbnail size (very easy to do) and then cast votes only rule would be the tag taker can not vote for own pic

In 2008 the Moto Guzzi Club ran a land marks event in add of Spinal research (where yours truly won gold).
It involved photographing your steed at up to 70 landmarks around the UK.
If you would like me to re-hash it for a "Martin Leyland 2014 Challenge", I would be pleased to.
There would be an entry fee going to a charity.
    Perhaps two prizes.
    1. for the most number of tag points visited.
    2. for the most money raised/donated. (I got sponsored for each tag I did by the points that tag was awarded).

    OK peeps.
The New Year is quickly approaching.
If I am to feel comfortable doing this, I would like some more positive feedback.

So each tag has a set amount of points? Farthest away the highest points, or something like that?
Maybe set up a paypal for entrance fees ( If enough riders participate ).
More than happy for you to run it. Great idea.
