How much are you hard wired into modern living Do you ? Use solar panels Shower in the garden when it's raining Grow your own food Make your own vine Log burners Recycle clothes buy second clothes Makes things before buying new Worsted of all you try to keep up with having new tech and the latest best things Remember qoute if I may The things we buy end up owning us ?
My dream life would be owning a yak farm in siberia, as far away from modern civilisation as possible. ive always been fascinated by woodland and survival. A couple of times a year I go wild camping for a few days to get away from it all, learn and practice new skills and get back to basics. its comforting to know that if the shtf, id stand a good chance of looking after myself and the mrs. im quite frugal when it comes to cash and wouldnt consider myself to be materialistic. ive always been brought up to know the difference between need and want and i think very carefully before buying anything. when i do, i always consider second hand or making it myself if i know how to or can learn. i try and spend my money on experiences rather than buying items i dont actually need and havent bought a new item of clothing in about 5 years. i repair what i have, and the only additions are normally presents at christmas/birthdays etc. it seems to me the less you have, the happier you are with what youve got. anybody who has traveled to "non-tourist'y" destinations and experienced their culture will have seen that first hand. . As a side note... the last time I looked into it, the current ability of solar panels houses does not off set their cost with what they save you on your bill. So to me they're not worth investing in at the mo.
Does my dream of living it up in new york with my obscenely thirsty v8, few bikes and a house full of tech not really fit in? ....
Rjvader I'm with you all the way mate can't stand today's throw away society I use my money to buy what I need rather than what I want The odd luxury now and then If I wearnt tied into the system I would move to the woods tomorrow
i went for a walk in the countryside today as it was my day off, even took my trusty old SLR (none of this digital shite) anywho, loved it, then stepped in a massive dog turd that had been spray painted red to highlight it (ok i must be blind) then the heavens opened. Could have cried. no coat, no gloves, no umbrella, normal socks, shit on my shoe and a wet camera. I would love to be totally off grid though. I keep searching for land out of the way that has some trees. plan; buy land with trees make tree house make old gas canister into a log burner make a back burner for said heater to warm my water a range cooker (wood/coal fired)= cooker, iron, bread oven, oven & heater/dryer all in one collect water from my roof bed out of pallets (mattress on top (necessary evil) no tv no phone no internet old tin bath into a sofa trolley in half for an extra seat. kitchen worktop made from a wooden cast and concrete poured in no cuboard doors no doors bar the entrance a shotgun a still to make moonshine some pliers to pull out a few teeth NO MIRRORS! a pet goat +happy northerner who refuses to be part of this 21st century 'hash tag/poke' shite
from your list; Shower in the garden when it's raining- i have done once in wales but the rain didn't last and its something no one should see Grow your own food-i've a big veggie garden Make your own vine-don't drink Log burners-for the patio heater yeah Recycle clothes buy second clothes-always, its cheaper and the old stuff is better made Makes things before buying new-don't think i'm ever without a project (currently making two arm chairs) Worsted of all you try to keep up with having new tech and the latest best things- i have an iphone 5?
Would love to be off grid. We have a friend who has most of the above, large small holding, fishing rights on the Severn, yurts set up and a camp site. Reed filter system for sewerage in fact the urinal is direct into the reed bed. One of his tenants has built his own house total cost £5k, it's amazing, timber frame from fallen branches hay bale walls. The floor was laid starting with 2ltr plastic bottles, rain water for grey water, and warm as anything. All the materials are recycled apart from sand and cement for the footings.
There's a place in Canada I visit every year called Muskoka. We stay in a cottage on Bass Lake. My uncle and his friend are in the middle of building their own cottage on a lake, they are carpenters. And very much live off the grid for a few weeks every summer. Fish, BBQ, Beer, Boat.
This is proper "off gridding " Canada and areas off wilderness , bit different from living in a field behind Tescos near St helens !
A guy I know used to work in a music venue and played in bands - he was a keen photographer and lived in the city - he then just moved to Finland and basically lives there lumberjacking, driving dogs and sleds and enjoys the wilderness ... I mean taking the dogs out for a walk :
Just watched a star on earth on bbc 4 with Dr Brian Sux Cox. In the great scheme of things we're about a nats cock away from cracking fussion power so all our troubles are over! Just need some investment to speed things up. Last year the UK spent more on ring tones than it invested in the fussion program ! WTF
Yeah that was me, had been up in preston riding a Harley Davidson- what awesome bikes they are. Mine on tuther hand- a right handful, back tyre needs replacing badly, was so slippy out there
thought that might have been you , around 5pm, I passed a red nelli in my car , think an XJR13 was with you, yes was getting cooler and slippy , saw you on the LArge Hutton Roundabout , the bike looked good but get rid of that Honda plate on it FFS
Yeah going rather slowly around it too, was very sloppy at mid day going tuther way so wasn't taking any chances. It's wasy dad on his 79' GL1000
