Hey guys, moving into a house with my own garage and a man cave has got me looking for ideas to fill some spare time and Ive more space than I know what to do with.

I quite fancy picking up a cheap engine in the next couple of months, (working or not) to take apart, see how it all works, practice anything I may need to do on my bikes in the future like valve clearances and the like and then fail miserably at putting it back together. something cool to go on my coffee table too haha. Thought about a full project bike but i lack a van / trailer to transport anything I couldn't fit in the boot of the mrs' C1 and dont have any cash to pile in to a project.

Does anybody have an idea what sort of price range id be looking at, anywhere localish I would be able to source one and if id need any specialist tools to get it all down to component parts and back together. Dont really know where to start. Had a quick browse on ebay of course but everythings incomplete or seems a bit pricy for what im after. Won't be for a while yet, just trying to get a bit of a head start with some research and this is obvioiusly my first point of call. Cheers :)

Should be easy enough to pick up a cheap motor.

It's even worth finding a complete runner to practice on, should be easy enough to run on a bench. I did see a SV650 with a seized motor for £150 so bargains are out there.

As for special tools you may need some, but many can be fabricated for one off use, take my FJR there is a special tool for getting the fork spring seat out to get to the damper nut and another to hold the damper nut. The seat tool was over come with some strong stainless wire and the damper nut was held with 2 pieces of wooden quadrant. The quadrant will also be used when re-fitting. This has avoided obtaining a 26mm socket and some 3/4 tube to weld together for a one off use.

Old parallel twins seem like a good starting point - cheaper to fix up, plus fewer moving parts but all the same principles such as crank, overhead cam, 4 valves and more than one piston, oil pump, gear box etc - great idea and would love to do something like that myself but sadly no room !

Good on you, I don't have the time or patience for this at the moment, but it's something I'd like to do

Excellent, im wanting to do the same. Starting to read up on it all, how everything works fully etc. My idea is when i get my new bike then keep the thundercat and strip and rebuild it over time

I can get you a 400cc v4 for pittance or free if you like, they look great cleaned up and used as bottle holders or back lit with glass on top and used as a table. Just binned two 250cc engines (didn't see this thread sorry)
