Someone else mentioned that - I think the chain is ok but I thought I had been looking after it - I assume I am looking at any stiff links etc ?
Sounds like detonation (pinking), as Jim said, when was the last service and plug change, are you useing different fuel.
Rotate the wheel and inspect all the links by moving them with your fingers, if you find a few that are hard to move then you need to replace your chain and sprockets. Another thing whilst I have been thinking, how much play is on your chain at present. The fairing knocking could be your chain hitting your chain guard/hugger (if fitted). Keep to the simple ideas first.
The chain does not have a lot of movement - about 1cm at the loosest point.. will look at the links this w/e
Your chain is WAY too tight. The Haynes manual states 35-40mm free play in drive chains on F, G, H and J model ZX-6Rs. Think you've just found your problem...
Fantastic, Hopefully thats it. Will get the spanners out and see what happens... if I have bits left over I am blaming you
Too slack and it'll slap the underside of the swingarm like an old man in a Hooters bar slapping backsides. Too tight and it'll put a huge amount of stress on the chain and the bearings. As a rule of thumb (VERY rough guide), lift the lower chain from about 2-3" behind the footpeg and the chain should JUST about touch the black plastic chain guide that runs along the underside of the swingarm BEHIND the foot peg. Depending on how long and hard it's been run with that chain tension you may have already caused damage, which may be what you're hearing, so there's no guarantee that slackening the chain off will stop the noise. Hopefully it will but no guarantee... I'll keep my fingers crossed for you mate. Pick yourself up a used Haynes manual for the 95-02 ZX-6R (like here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kawasaki-zx6r-zx636-Haynes-manual-good-condition-/160756768933?pt=UK_CarParts_Vehicles_Manuals_Litterature_ET&hash=item256dd9a0a5 ) - they're an absolute Godsend for info like this and slowly but surely you'll learn how to look after and maintain your bike. Will save you mucho pennies in the long run, mate
Got the Manual already - I am not mechanical - prefer software, but have been learning as I have been going along and actully enjoying it. am on the bike today at work so will check the chain at lunch.
How about tight spots in the chain? The cat makes a slight knocking noise due to a tight part of the chain.
tip - change it before it snaps. a broken chain cost me a new hugger, swing arm, undertray and engine casings. could easily have cost my foot as well. weigh that against £80 for a new chain & sprocket set....
I was looking at that - it only seems to happen when I am under power.. if I rev with the clutch down its not there... or at least I cant hear it.
my zx9 has a noisy clutch, pull your lever in on tickover if the noise comes back when you let the clutch out you know what it is
I have had a friend have a look.. he thinks its the air intake.. it only happens at about 4000 - 50000 rpm... I cant feel it in the frame or on the pegs.. It needs to go in for a service - so will get them to take a look.
doesnt sound like dettonation.generally that will only happen when running extremely lean afr. and it will occur when the engine reaches max torque which would be about 10 thou on most sports bikes.det doesnt realy make a nocking noise anyway although it is commonly called knock. it sounds like a tin can with a hand full of bb,s that has been wrapped in a towel and shaken like f*ck.. sure youll get it sorted in time...probably by prosess of elimination
LOL - it may just be the age of the bike and part of its charm... does not seem to be causing any issues... will still get it checked out when I can. Dont want to be without it.
ok, have some more information to add to the pot... Been to Matlock today.. let the tank get pretty low on the way home.. knocking stopped.. Refuled and its back again... 3rd or 4th Gear at about 4000 - 6000... Very odd, and does not do it when not under power (i.e. with clutch in or in neutral)
