You need to be dispassionate about it. If you are gonna make any money at couriering, you need to run the bike on a shoe string.
Keep the brakes free and some meat on the pads, the chain lubricated and adjusted, the lights bright, the engine changed regular, the tyres at the right pressure.
You then need to learn to ride around things like worn (but legal) tires, etc.

If you climb in the boxing ring with a champion, the last thing you would worry about is your lipstick and eye liner.
