    Thinking about this

    • Ride to Portsmouth
    • Ferry to Santander (24h)
    • Ride to Cadiz (A days ride on nice roads instead of motorway)
    • Ferry to Lanzarote (31h)
I'd stay in Lanzarote for a week, and then do it home.

Any tips/ideas? I have like 5 days to plan it (if it goes ahead).

Mainly looking for ways to get cheap ferries...prices online at the moment are expensive :(

My accommodation in Lanzarote is free, so I can sort of justify the ferry prices.

boat to spain - loads of times,
but a day to get to Cadiz - i think not, that would be one hell of a days slog.
why not ride across spain and get the boat to majorca instead ? nicer roads and quicker too.

enjoy pal i am not jealous one bit

yeah same as ..been to Santander and Bilbao numerous times hate them both …take too long …as per above Cadiz is a two dater from Santander ,,,is this the only boat going to Lanzarote….if you land in santander handy , you would poss make Barcelona , no ferries going from there ?

The way id go to Cadiz is , acrros the Picos to Santiago , stop just below this city , then the next day carry on down the coast towards Lisbon …fantastic road that is , cliffs one side and the Atlantic on the other…really nice scenic ride …..

the heat in spain zaps you and a full days ride there is a lot different from a full days ride here ...

plan b? fly to lanzarote and hire a bike there …..

Dave, for me Id rather bike it, to get the sense of achievement of getting there under my own steam. Even if it cost me 10x more, id still want do it, its an adventure.

The only thing that annoys me is crossing water, I know we need to get off this isle we are on.. But as soon as I hit France i love how i can just go as far as I like..

People walked from here to what is now Israel during the crusades, what a fucking outstanding effort, and I applaud them for doing that.

I plan on making the same journey myself once the shit in Syria calms down, but by bike. Sure I could go by plane, but there is no fun in that :)

The destination is lanzarote because a friend has offered free accommodation there. I'd love to take my bike but looking at ferry dates I don't think I could do it.

I guess a bike trip will wait until next summer. I like the sound of plan b and renting a bike over there.

Would love to ride it but i think you're right... There's too much water involved... And then add on the return journey...

Ah well. It was an idea.

What are the usual options for bike rentals? I don't want to be stuck on a 125 again lol

Yeah absoluletly agree adventures are great …i do them lots….Im going on Hols to Greece later this year, we are riding the bikes to Athens, stopping there for two days then returning …fuk me its going to be warm !!!
I was thinking more of lilday has he hasn't done much touring , so to kick off with a mean trip like that is daunting ,but bloody exciting. he won't have much idea how vast it is out there….that shows with expecting to get to cadiz in a day …spain is a big country and to get from the far north to the south west in a day , is a big big hope…..but i agree with your adventures….i love em ..

Oh sweet, that's a nice journey! Are you going down the Croatian Coast, and through Albania, or are you going round through Serbia etc?
I haven't been down that coast yet, so if you do - take some pics :)

..and yeah it does get rather hot I made the mistake of going in July last year, I wanted it to be super warm, but 45c was too fucking super warm. :p

I remember going to the highlands when I first got my bike, just for a jaunt one weekend with a tent.
I vividly remember thinking when seeing the signs say 300 miles+ or some such that I'll never make it home, it will be easier to just leave the bike here and get a train home.

Then when you become battle-hardened and you are smashing 1000 miles per day because you are sick of being on holiday and you just want to get home :p

Touring is great... Ending up hundreds of miles from your morning departure adds a different element to riding... And riding every day really makes you appreciate your bike...

My tours so far have been quite well planned, with daily destinations set. I really want to do an unplanned one with just a couple weeks off and a rough destination set.

These are what I prefer to do, absolutely amazing stuff!

Pro-tip: Turn off anything that tells you the time, and no alarm clocks. It doesn't matter what time it is.
If you keep looking at the time it will grind you down, you will feel rushed, and waking up to an alarm clock every morning is gross.

    1. Wake up at sunrise every day & have breakfast.
    2. Ride until the sun is directly upwards in the sky and then chill again.
    3. Talk to some strangers, eat some food, chill out.
    4. Ride some more until you find somewhere nice.
    5. Pitch tent chill out/talk to strangers/eat nibbles/read a book/look at a map then sleep.
You'll probably fall asleep at 9pm, meaning you will be up for sunrise again.

Id love to live like that 365 days a year.

Best idea - go get lost in Spain! It's not a 3rd world country so lots of accommodation and petrol stations. The best trips I've ever done was around just getting lost. Seeing how high you can get up the mountains is always fun.

I once got off the ferry in Santander in the morning and rode into a bar in fuengirola. If you ever get the chance to do it Fucking don't! !!!!!

Drove to Croatia from manchester once in under 2 days and I was fooked!! mile and miles of motorway couldn't imagine riding there, need small tours of the UK on my bike to get me warmed up first.

Was there much damage to the bar Fronk? sound like all great trips these but 55hrs each way on a ferry sounds like a grind...

The ferry is only 24 hours from Portsmouth to Santander. Their is entertainment on all day and into the evening. It has a swimming pool and 2 cinemas. We watched war donkey for some reason all the big hard bikers seamed to get dust in their eyes at the same time.

The bar gets some loving. Make sure you book a cabin it makes life so much easier.

    What about flying in leathers?

Basically I want to take my leathers away and there is NO WAY they'll fit in the case. Plus the weight of them.

I was thinking of getting a lift to the airport on my mates bike with a backpack. Backpack goes in the hold as luggage and helmet comes on with me as hand luggage. I'd wear leathers until I get over there and get changed (or get straight on a bike).

Anybody ever been on a plane wearing leathers? Sounds stupid lol
