    Hi,
    Can anyone help.
What is the normal running temperature for a CBR FireBlade 1998 RRW ?
When should the fan kick in ?
What checks should i do ?
I've just been out to the shed, got my bike out to start her up, I'm a summer rider only now and i like to do this a couple of times over the winter months and bring her up to temp just to get the oil and things moving again after being stood idle since the back end of October.
Anyway i started her up, shut the choke off when she was ready and then i thought i'll just nip inside and have a brew while she runs up to temp, when i returned the digital temp gauge was reading 140, the fan wasn’t running, i thought sh*t and turned her off immediately.
With that i'm very concerned that i may have done some damage, not really from what’s happened today but i’m thinking more about when i was riding out on it last season, I’ve been riding along quite happily all last season but to be honest i don’t recall ever looking at the temp gauge, like a fool i just took it for granted that everything was fine, so with this i’m not sure if i’ve been riding round like this all last summer or not.
Yes i know i should have paid more attention but what’s done is done

thermostat starts to open at 82, fully open at 95c
    fan off at 93-97c
    fan on at 98-102c

maybe your stat is stuck m8 - does the fan work when you short out the temp switch???

there is a manual for it in the hondamoto link in the online manuals bit - well, for the 2000 929rr which is more or less the same bike afaik [IMG]
those temps are the same for the vtr and others so i would assume they are more or less generic settings for most wc hondas

wouldnt worry too much about damage m8, the air cooled ones will run to 140+ with no problems.
short temp hight temp wont break it - could be a problem with the temp sensor or tamp gauge.
see if theres any dodgy wires first before you start fretting!

    Alright Kev,

As Martin said I cant see that you would of done any damage when you were riding itin the summer. When they go due to high temperatures they go big time pal. My KTM did anyway. Like you I took it for granted, got a bit blazay with the oil and it over heated and seized.

When the bike was at 140 degrees, did it actually feel that hot because I would expect your safety valve on the radiator would kick in and throw out some of the coolant due to the high temp and expansion of the coolant.

I would change the stat mate and take it from there, good luck

On my zx6r the fan kicks in about 102 and back out in the 90s, did it heat up really quick is both sides of the rad getting warm as the bike is getting around 80 if not its defo the stat or a faulty sender unit sensor.

    Give this a go,

Do exactly what you did before, then when its at 140 again give the bike a load of throttle to get the coolant flowing about.

even though the pump is running, it is in a low speed pump mode type thing.

you might be surprised to see the temp drop mate.

    let me know

    Thanks for the help guys,
Unfortunatly i'm busy today looking after a sick rug rat :puke:
for those that know Adam (cheekyads) and i'm back in work tomorrow so won't be able to do anything at the moment but i'll have a good look at things next weekend and post the results

Oh forgot to mention, the fan could be spun round freely both clockwise and anticlockwise with no resistance what so ever, is this normal ?

    Hi, thanks for advise guys.
Well got the bike out today, checked fluid, OK, checked fuse, OK, so with that i made up a link wire with some crock clips (i used crock clips coz i was on my own and found it easier with them) attached them to the battery and then put the other ends on the fan motor terminals. the fan did not spin, i know the unit is earthed to the frame/engine whatever but i just thought i'd run a direct link to both terminals just to be sure, is what i've done correct and am i right in thinking the motor is of no more.

sounds like new fan needed. i take it the fan is mechanically ok (spins ok by hand?)
may just be a loose connection or something (in the fan itself). but id try to find a cheap one on ebay and replace it.
should run straight away if you put a direct voltage on it.

The wires you need to short are the 2 that run from the temp sensor on the rad to the fan.

You are bypassing the sensor and makin the fan run.

hope you shorted the correct wires, and didnt cause....

noticed this hasn't been updated..... [IMG]

    speaking to kev earlier....

    the temp was displaying F

    which = 60C :rofl:

so... i have seen somewhere that you can switch between units with the trip reset button...
anyone know how to do this?

i'm sure you have to like hold the trip button for a few seconds then turn off & on again or something similar...

*off fireblade.org, they reckon - Re: Temperature Guage on 954Hold the right button for like 10 secs or somthing
you will see it change back...its holding the right button only...

but not sure if kevs bike has a clock.fk it, let him figure it out himself for taking p*ss out of my storm

so why didnt the fan work when he connected a direct source of voltage?
