Ive used all balls too and never had a problem. I had a set in my wheels about 2years, I changed them recently when i reframed my bike and they were as new. If like kev says you fit, knocked out and refitted thats probably why theyre fucked, especially if you was knocking them in on the inner race, use the outer shell of the old one or a socket with the same outer diameter

I have used ALL BALLS without any problems. may not have been put in and torqued up properly?
I have used them on my steering and wheel bearings and have had no probs 9so far).

It might just be the camera, but that bearing looks well cooked.

I'd be looking at why it's gone cos I'd be very surprised if the bearing is at fault.
Is there wear on the shaft, or the spacer. Is there a groove in the wheel recess.

Funny to see this as I was talking to another guy at work about bearings today. We could not recall seeing an under or oversized bearing. That's a combined experience of over 50 years.

..one trick I learned in the early days was to put the bearings in the freezer for a good while before fitting - I'd get a heat gun on the wheel hub and then go at fitting the bearings - you still had to drive them in carefully, but the tiny differences in size due to heat/cold made it it lot easier...

i removed and fitted as i mentioned in the first page to avoid damaging the bearing in any way. removal with the rag was my own idea, but used the socket after reasearching how to fit them properly.

in hindsight, i may have been hasty to judge it as a heap of shit out of frustration. if bearings dont often fail and theyre generally known as a good brand i can only assume i either got one which slipped through quality control or it was damaged when my dad put it in first time round, hwhich is the probably the most realiistic cause as i wasnt there to observe and he's far from a mechanic... in fact im classed as the mechanic of the household and we all know my track record at that haha :p

oh well, we live and learn i suppose :)

a new bearing arrived today to replace the fooked one and ive noticed that the spacer that goes inside the hub of the wheel isnt touching both bearings so may be damaged. there seems to be around 1 mm of space and its jamming on the axle when i slide it through so the axle takes a good few hits to fit. im 100% certain both bearings are seated correcty as there was a change in pitch when tapping them in, which google tought me was the thing to look out for. so perhaps its the internal spacer thats the issue?

im going to go down the route of removing everything and buying a full set of bearings and spacers incase theres an underlying issue which has caused it. replacing everything will surely mean i dont go through a shed load of bearings before finding what might be up.

To make certain, common sence tells me the internal spacer should be touching both bearings and the axle should slide through it with little resistance?

    cheers :)

oh come on! youve gotta give me some credit... im completely new to anything mechanical and trying to learn as i go along rather than letting a garage do everything. id say im a completely different catagory of facepalm inducing stupidity than our resident kitchen painter :p

Yes, the inner races and the spacer should create one sold tube when all are assembled correctly.

Yep the tube should be a tight fit and not able to wobble about.

When you tighten the spindle the gap will create side loading on the bearing, side load and vertical load on a ball bearing is not good. It gets hot, very hot. The grease melts, the seals melt, the grease leaves, then the bearing fails.

skf fag :D both excellent manufacturers of bearings , probably two of the main suppliers to the motor trade, - i would inform wemoto what has happened , theres no blueing on the bearing so it not overheated or started to seize up ?

SKF, FAG and KOYO bearings have all been OK for me. Except for once with a rear wheel bearing on the old Guzzi which failed with no warning and created a very interesting ride home.
As said, measure sizes and use a bearing factors by the bearing code for fully sealed (2RS) bearings. Just avoid the place near the Mancunian way / Deansgate in Manchester, they were horribly overpriced.
If anyone does have an oversize housing issue with a ballrace any time there is a bodge round it. When fitting the bearing, wrap a very thin (under 0.05mm) feeler gauge strip or similar round the bearing. It will act as a shim to stop the bearing coming loose, you will probably need to scalpel a bit of excess shim from the outside after fitting, but better than having any trapped behind it!
