Connecting Heated Grips to a switched positive wire ?

Got some Keis heated grips but it mentions connecting to a switched positive wire and not to connect direct to battery to save risking leaving them on and draining battery.

Any advice what wire to connect it to on a 99-02 SV650 ?

    Cheers :)

been told to connect it to the rear light wire as this has a good strong voltage connection, and on the key..
but I just connected my roxsters (re-badged oxford) straight to the battery live and earth to a chassis bolt, supposed to have a voltage drop sensor so that it wont drain the battery so bike will still have enough juice to fire up the bike.
But just ring up a bike shop and ask if their a decent shop they should give you some advice.

Yup the Oxford's are wired direct to the battery and the low voltage sensor works. A few times I've fired my Ninja up and forgotten to put the choke on and she's sputtered and coughed like a 50-a-day pensioner and the Oxford heated grips control unit just flashed the blue LED at me when I tried to turn it on and refused to activate. Turn it off, choke on, rev it a little to get the old girl growling properly, Oxfords turn back on no probs at all.

So long as you've got a warning/telltale LED that tells you when they're turned on you should be fine. Put it this way - you'll only leave them turned on the one! Bump starting your bike is quite an effective aide-memoire!! :p

I hard wired mine into the ignition wire from the fuse box, that way there is no risk of leaving them on,a mate sent me this wiring diagram to wire from the battery as an alternative
If you go off the battery best fit a relay, ignore the 12v socket if you wish

I would go to the ibnition barrel tbh

Aye, to guarantee you dont leave them on just find a switched wire to splice into. if you can post a wiring diagram i could point out a place to go from. ive wired most of my extra bits off a switched wire. If you do go straight to the battery through a seperate stand alone switch, just make sure the switch is rated correctly for the max current draw of the grips. even safer as mentioned above, use a relay with contacts rated well above the current draw.

Thinking of tapping in to Rear light wire as too much of a nightmare to get to the ignition wires !!

Looking at diagram below, is the black with white dots wire the switched positive ?

.....and is the brown wire the earth ?

ok mate just before i search for the brown i had a look where i would go from. more often than not the easiest place ive found is near a connector as theyre usually easy-ish to get to and arent wrapped with loadsa tape/insulation.
Follow red wire from battery +ve up to ingnition switch. If you look at the ON line there are 3 black lines (sorry if im teaching you to suck eggs, might as well just explain how i got to where im going) and those lines represent the switched contacts with the ign in the ON position. So the red goes back out of the orange through that connector. Follow the orange line and it goes to a connector mid-diagram at the top (just under the engine stop switch). Now can u see that loop, that will be an actual wire loop on a connector, if it isnt a really small loop you could use that, snip, solder, insulate. If its too difficult my next port of call would be (follow the orange again, heading down to the bottom left) that connector at the bottom left hand side. It looks like a connector very near the handlebars (as it plugs into the dimmer switch and turn signal switch) and the orange goes ... no-where. So i'd remove that orange wire and use it for your grips. If your grips have their own fuse fitted crack on and wire it up to that orange wire. job done with minimal disruption to your harness.
hope that helps and hope it was ok to understand.

yep the brown is the lighting circuits switched live (you dont have a lights on off switch? they always come on when ignition is on yes?)

also ive just noticed that connector on the very left hand side that doesnt seem to go anywhere ? if you can find that i'd bang +ve and -ve in that connector, or use the wires. Maybe that is there for a different model that has twin headlights or sommet. Manufacturers often use the same looms for various models and occasionally have plugs left over (like this looks like)

    that all make sense ?

If that's the connector with brown & Black/white on it, then it does go somewhere on mine ! To the dipped bulb in headlight :)

    Ok, here we go !!

Located connector from ignition barrel / switch.
The wires going into it are:
    Brown
    Red
    Orange/Yellow line
    Orange
    Black/white line
    Grey

So which one do I connect +ve to and which one do I connect -ve to ?

ok sorry m8. np, im just going off the diagram :)

I dunno if its just my monitor (im at work atm and this computer/monitor is dog turd!) but i cant see the orange with yellow line (on diagram it looks like orange with red line)

    Simplified ...

    ** Orange wire = +VE

** Black with white line = -VE (i dont see any need to switch the negative)

    That ok ?

Just noticed, the diagram is for US model ?? lol (also id just double check the UK diagram has same colours !)

    *edit:

also did you locate that 11 pin plug thats in the lower left corner of the diagram ?

(On diagram it looks Orange with red line, on bike it is orange with a feint yellow line !)

Will try what you suggest and will report back tommorow if I don't go bang :p

I have only just noticed it US as well !! Damn yanks !

Couldn't find that other block !

haha, if you cant find the UK diagram it should be the same [the orange] I'd expect that big connector to 'possibly' be behind the headstock / under tank area rather than rammed in behind the headlight. just follow where the wires go if you want to go that route. otherwise just go with your original plan (orange and black/white). it wont go bang dont worry !
i think the colour discrepancies might just be down to US / UK but im not 100%.
let us know how you get on tomoz mate, glad to of been some assistance. I know electrics can be daunting but its nowt special tbh !
i best go do some wiring of my own for my employer now lol ;)

turn ign off and just check back in 15mins make sure its all good and that theyve cooled (it just triple checks ur wiring) and job done

haha no probs ! anytime ;)
