Its works perfectly for me, I use mine all over the county in my wagon.. Imagine how many a-z's I don't have to carry as a result and how many hours sat in traffic it has saved me.. Tom Tom live gives up to date delays and re routes missing them if it will save time..

i had 4 a-z's when i was on the wagons and did fine, used to write any directions down on the screen, easy peasy.

I started about 10 years ago and paid about 300 quid for one of the early sat nav's and got the piss took by all the seasoned truckers... Same fellas who all now have their own.. Not saying your method wouldn't still work it's just not needed any longer.. Plus on multi drop I wouldn't have much screen left especially in shit holes like Birmingham and Sheffield..

Sat navs are good as they will always get you home if you get losted

Head to a new place follow your nose then when you've had enough sat nav on head home )

Well you should recognise them old timer.

I have been on too many runs where good roads have been missed because the shat nav has been miss heard, rebooted of just not programmed.

Many of our generation will call kids today because they can't do their mental times tables and so make basic errors with calculators. Many of us see exactly the same kind of basic mistakes being made by newbies with shat-navs.

As bike courier I ran with A-Z of Manchester Leeds Liverpool n Sheffield. I also had a road atlas with the major city centres. I also had a basic sat-nav in my phone. If the destination did not fall in the area covered by the maps I would use the phone to triangulate the destination on the atlas and plan my route on the atlas to within a couple of miles. Then I would set up the shat-nav to go the last bit.

6" m12 bolt 6.5" hosepipe nyloc nut and a phone holder for your phone.
Disassemble phone holder now assemble bolt slide hosepipe on the nyloc nut may need washers both sides hose pipe attach phone holder now push contraption through the big hole were header bearings are now tighten up.
Clip phone in run any sat navigation app you want.
    What did that cost £3
I do this setup with my Sony xperia z1 works a charm but i only use Google maps not sat navigation so I can judge corners better and discover different routes

Not had net for a while :( my phone isnt any good for satnav apps, (galaxy ace) and battery is sh*t so would still need a carging device so it dont die. Ideally the satnav would be for getting too or from Luton so its not for local use :) i have an a-z but i have a crap memory so would forget half the rout before i even left :p

It's like anything else really, if you practise it you get better. You could jot down a summary and tape it to your tank, (or get a small tank bag with a clear pocket.)
Anyway, going back to the modern world :) I would look around for a TomTom Rider. I have had one for years and it still works fine despite being soaked loads of times and dropped more than once. There have been a few new models released, so you should be able to pick up one fairly cheap. Whatever you do, don't get a cheap Chinese one off the 'net. I have seen some real junk.
