I want to buy a garage door as I'm building myself a garage and new prices are out of my price range.. They are all pick up only and my only way of collecting is my car on the roof rack.. There will be approx 2ft overhang either side and I'm unsure if its illegal or not.. I've found one in Middleton which is about 4-5 miles so wouldn't be carrying it that far..
I had a full shed built on my roof, had the ex drive car I followed on bike behind at a good enought distance that was funny as hell shed was bigger than car still cleaning overspray
id say as long as you clearly mark the edges of it with dangly rags or whatever you should be okay. carried a king size mattress tied to the top of my dads old shape micra. that had way mofe than 2ft overhang and all was well.
as above, done this with my old fiesta, was a bit hairy at anything over 30mph though, car kept lifting at the front hahaha. as said, mark the edges and secure well, straps etc and you should be reet, only ever been stopped for unsafe loads, a car is no wider than a bus with a garage door on the roof so its not as though you'll be hogging the other lane. just beware of pedestrians and lamp posts close to the kerbs!
I used to put a 10m scaffold frame on the roof of my old escort van all tied down it was the hight of the van on top of the van and stuck out about. Foot an half at the sides drove milton keynes to canterbury and back every week for 3 months I never got stopped and that was on the m1 and m25.
Check the Highway Code, it will state the maximum allowable overhang. Then you will know if it's legal or not.
It's all down to if anything happens on the journey Insurance will say you shouldn't have and try and wriggle out of a claim If you go for it try and pick the quietest time of the day avoid busy roads etc
Well made it home without any drama appart from loosing car ariel :bang:.. If anyone has an up and over style door and could post a pic from inside I would much appreciate it..
