I'm a little concerned about my engine, I have a two months warranty on it which runs out in a week so hopefully if anything's wrong i'm covered, but it has burnt nearly 700ml's of oil since i got it and i've only done about 2500 miles.

It sounds to me like the piston rings need looking at but then my understanding of engines is really pretty basic! Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

not that I can see, i've just had it idling so if could warm up before i topped it up and there was nothing. I do ride it a bit hard tho sometimes!

Hmmmmmm..... rings would be an obvious choice but had it been the rings you should see some smoke........?????

All engines burn oil, some more than others. What bike is it and how many miles has it done?

give it a few hand full's of revs. if the rings are worn then oil will pass and you'll see a blue-ish smoke from the exhaust. it could be your valve seals too.
if theres no blue smoke then it could be a leak. have a look at the base of the engine and check your water if its water cooled.

lol the 750's slow enough, can't imagine a 600 in there!

took it to the dealer today and he's going to check with suzuki for 'tolerances'for the oil. i'm going to do the same just in case lol, and he's going to sort the freeplay in the forks too! result :D

Went to the dealer today, he 'loudly' called the warranty company and acted surprised when he was told the industry standard is 1L per 1000 miles, like he didn't already know lol, anyway he tried to fob me off with well if its only burning 300 per thou etc its 'well within tolerance'.

In the end he agreed to do a compression test when I bring it back in on Saturday but i dont really know what a good result is or how it works, ie he can still tell me what he wants and that it's fine.

    Any advice appreciated!

So he's saying it should be burning more?! 1l per 1000 miles seems rather a lot - did you check with Suzuki yourself? In the first 3000 miles on the VFR, the level on the dipstick budged no more than 1-2mm. Then had it serviced and oil changed.

If there is something wrong, they'll probably try to fob you off so you 'agree' that it's acceptable, and then any future issues will fall out of warranty.
