Hi peeps. Bit of an odd question but im going to try and explain and id be very grateful of some advice.

I am having trouble starting my GS500E! The bike was serviced last week and im not doubting the bikes starting ability im doubting the way I try to start it.

When I try to start i put on full choke, push the button and apply abit of throttle at the same time - but this doesnt seem to start it. Finally after moving the choke abit - it starts but im worried one day the bike wont because of my method.

Are there certain ways to starting older bikes? (mine is 1997). Does it need some throttle?

    Thanks
    James

I never use the throttle, only the choke

Mine's a bitch to start as well, it's a 20 year old engine design, you should be able to start it without using the throttle.

    try putting less choke on
what i find tho is the colder the weather more choke just a case of trial and error till you find the best way

I have to on mine, took me ages to figure out why it wouldn't start the first time I tried and I ended up getting a friend round to have a look at it, how embarassing!

    Im sorted

Thanks for the responses the bike is now starting first time, every time.

I allow full choke, pull the clutch in and just press the button; before I was also giving some throttle before. Im assuming by doing that I was just flooding the engine so ive obviously stopped.

    Thanks
