The Isle Of Man, how good is it? Really?

Motorcycling events aside, what's it like to live there? I might have an opportunity to work there very soon... permanently. What are the perks of living there? Any downsides?

All info is very much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Paul

Erm it's fairly quiet most of the year, houses, food etc aren't exactly cheap, we have great scenery, can get fairly well paid jobs over ere depending what you do, pay less tax here.
Really depends what your circumstances are and what you like doing.
I have lived in England, Wales and Australia but was born on the Isle of Man and have been back living here for around 18 years, to be honest I like it here now but then I get to have holidays at least once a year and have a nice house, land for my dogs, daughter goes to good school, I get quite well paid etc.
    :D

I'll have the opportunity to go back "home" on the weekends as I won't be working them unless I want the overtime.

I'm in the early stages of this as I was only informed of this opportunity today. I'll probably know for definate within the next 5 or 6 weeks.

I've not got any children or commitments etc I need to stick to.

Oh well if you get to go home every weekend you're alright anyway!! Although saying that, it would depend if they are going to fly you home or you have to get the boat as the boat can be a bit of a pain!

    Hey Paul,
I moved here 8 years ago from South Liverpool, its great! It took a little adjusting to life over here, but I wouldnt move back to liverpool now. Its the lack of crime, low income taxes, low unemployment, very low vehicle insurance, no MOT's, not to mention the National Speed Limit signs that = go as fast as you like  that kinda won me over!!
Although they have a Work Permit policy over here, without one you cannot work here. The permit doesnt belong to you it belongs to your employer on your behalf. The first one is always a little tricky as the permits office are looking for reasons not to allow them to people from the UK - they are just trying to protect employment for locals, but following ones are just a formallity. You will need to have a permit for the first 5 years of living here. Unless you have a criminal record, and a hoard or 'dependants' you should be ok if you have a trade, the Island is short of tradesmen. Another important point is that you will not be able to claim any types of Social Security Benefit for the first 5 years either.
Its very friendly over here, the only place there is any trouble tends to be in Douglas itself, and that tends to be down to visitors. You can leave yer lid resting on the top of you bike, without alarming it or locking it up with chains etc here without worrying about anyone nicking it, away from Douglas. There is a great biking scene here obviously, and you can find yourself just chatting to random bikers for hours on end up at the Creg-Ny-Baa pub on a Sunday afternoon.
The TT, MGP and Southern 100 are great, there are also Track Days up at Jurby including Streetfighter Straightliners Days.
It does seem to go VERY quiet here during the Winter months, but I think alot of that is to do with the fact that there is SOoooo much to do in the warmer months - so the contrast is fairly dramatic. The Gyms and Sports Centres are good over here if you are into sports, although we could really do with a multi-plex cinema!
Cant think what else to write at the min, feel free to ask though!!
