2.0turbo DSG 5dr/3dr currently on the shortlist

Any had one anything particular to look for other than the normal? It'll be the semi auto paddle shift more than likely black/silver

Black ones have a reputation for eating camshafts.
Silver ones can suffer with gearbox probs on the semi auto system.
The output splines fuse and its new gearbox time.

White, red or blue ones are fine though. These are from a different factory.

Woody, for what its worth i have a R32 DSG
do not think the fuel economy is a problem on these - on the day to day commute i return on average 29 mpg, thrash it using the paddles and i see more like 26, motorway at 80 more like 33
the GTI is not much slower and certainly no better on fuel. but to be fair but it lacks the grunt and certainly lacks the soundtrack from the V6 - the R32 is worth considering just for the sound it makes even on the standard exhaust system and the DSG certainly fucks off from the lights and will blow a Manual out of the water off the lights.
The GTI is lighter on the front end and you can feel it. the R32 engine is a heavy bastard but coupled with the 4wd system too the GTI is a lighter car. The R32 is no slouch though and did i mention the noise from it

I was always a manual man (and still love them) but for 95% of the time the DSG is just right and a delight. for 5% of the time you wish you were in a manual.
DSG history is important. oil and filter every 40k MAX if done at 20k intervals even better. its a bit pot luck with reliability on them too, each year they get cheaper to fix or replace and it still works out cheaper than a clutch on a manual.

the DSG can be a bit slow witted some times too, changes up too early or down a bit eager, when cold they need a few mins before pulling away to allow the oil to warm and give the solenoids and easier life.

only kicker on the R32 is the road tax £480 unless you can find a 55 plate R32 thats not been to the moon and back or shagged out.

Residuals are strong for good R32's spec's vary. wing back recaro's in demands by boy racers but the full leather vienna the better option for most. RNS510 is a must, if you find on with a factory roof, winter packs and sub 60k miles for less than 11k - get it bought fast.

See I started on the R32 but got pushed to the GTI for the benefit of rear doors.....

Undoubtedly I would prefer the 32 but also gotta think about insurance!

For the 32's I was looking to spend around 9k and for the GTI's around 7k

If I was to get one I'd want the DSG as I love auto's but with the 'option' to have some input, whilst I like driving a manual im not a real 'driver' so not overly fussed

Also been looking at something completely different...... an ST220 as a cheaper/more sensible option :p

R32's are also in 4 door too.
insurance is cheaper than the GTI - you think i am joking just try and do a few online comparisons using reg numbers of the same age GTI vs R32

No idea how I missed a 5dr version.... Hmmmm

I'll do some quoting etc today at work and try to find one to test drive!

Aswell as all the power I prefer the looks of the 32 wayyy more than the GTI

Woody, if you fancy a run over to mold way this weekend pal, you are welcome to try my R32 for size fella and see what a nicely maintained 55k miler that's fully loaded feels like to drive. a similar example will cost you between 11 - 13k though

I'll stick my 2p in as some know I change my car all the time and to be honest if your looking at a mk5 gti I woukd not have another for a long time I woukd try and get a mk6 as there a lot more refined and the suspension is better and handling is a lot better as for the dsg your looking for big bills when they go wrong and they do a lot of the time more so on the early models I would be looking as well as a Audi S3 for that sort of money a lot more for your dollar Quattro for a start interior is a lot more refined and smother ride I have had all gti from mk4 to mk6 and all versions of the S3 and with the mk5 be prepared for oil consumption and cam lobe were as you have a part you have to change on a regular basis.

Id love a properly sorted R32 and the more I look into them the more I like them but......

All I seem to read is horror stories of boy racers smashing fook out of them earlier on in life.

I want a 1 owner 60 year old man to sell me his with less than 50k! lol

Id add a focus st into the mix.
Cheap, fast and good build quality.

But finding an un abused one may be tough.

Yea insurance is surprisingly cheap about £200 more per year than the new fiesta I was getting.

Hopefully going to a dealer this weekend to have a nosey so shall see what I can see :)

Have you driven one, I was thinking of getting one once then drove it.. I hated the sluggish gear change and lack of power and wasn't that impressed with the interior..
