phone mounting kits?

    Hi all,

I have seen various mobile phone mounting kits, for smartphones doubling as GPS, with USB adapters.
Is this a good idea? Any thoughts or advise.

I'm sort of torn, whilst I get great pleasure in using the many increasing apps and additions to my smart phone, is it wise to use it on a bike?
plus what would be the best USB adapted for power supply and also what would be the best case to stabilize it on my bike?
I ride a 125 lexmoto, and can get a USB fitted for around 20 quid, this would be good.

Just asking as I do use GPS a lot and in my job, get new addresses to visit without the benefit of an A to Z some days.
(I'm a care worker so get extra calls whilst out on the road.)

    Thanks,

im on the side of the fence which believes anything visual that distracts you from the road is bad. (although i do accept it can be viewed as handy for work related stuff, foreign urban navigation and pre-warning of any unexpected sharp corners etc.)

getting lost is part of the fun for me, and there’s a sense of achievement when you memorise a route and nail it first time. if i get super lost though, ive recently got blue tooth headsets for me and the Mrs, and i feel audio direction is more than sufficient (from a sat.nav app... not the Mrs :p) in that scenario or even what you’d be using it for.

if your phone battery lasts you sufficiently throughout the day then something like that may be better suited to you as it means you wont need to faff about with your electrics, wont need to fiddle around to remove it from a mount every time you stop and gives you the ability to phone ahead to say you’ll be late if you hit any more diesel patches ;)

Ultimate add ons seem to be the market leaders in this area . Good waterproof cases and leads .

But....the more you look at your shat nav , the less your looking at the hazards and dangers that are opening out in front of you . Keep your eyes focused into the distance, or you might not arrive at the place you have put in the shat nav to begin with !
A safer way is to have a bluetooth helmet connection linked to your phone , in your pocket . This way your only getting voices in your lid and it won't distract your vision as much . This comes in handy , should anything go wrong , you have a great excuse ...." The voices made me do it " !

I invested in a ram mounts kit a few months ago. It gets fitted into the triple clamp hole, which is surprisingly very secure.

You can then either buy universal cases or fitted cases to fit into the clamp.

    Couldn't recommend it enough.

Koolios, thanks. Agree with the distraction comment totally.
I don't want it there all the time, so love the vocal Bluetooth idea tremendously.
Also, the getting lost or recalling a plan from a previously memorised route is also a great plus. Thanks Rob :)
For my recreational riding that will be good, as has been the case with the band performances and a previous gander at Google earth is always fun when it goes right and if it doesn't, it can be fun also. :)
However the reason mainly for wanting some kind of help, would be to do with work. I don't get travelling time as it is, so any time I can save with getting to the destination in the shortest route would be a fab advantage for me.
I did mount it on the bicycle and was a great help, but that was like ok on the canal side not a busy road.
Lister, if only i had know you had a galaxy 3 case before my last upgrade to galaxy 5, Doh, :)
Thanks all, very helpful, Ill be looking and hinting (for Xmas) to Ultimate addons, :) (there's a rude pun in there somewhere!!)

in one of my lids i have the Bluetooth autcom Air ..,,…..,http://autocom.co.uk/bluetooth-motorcycle-headset.html
Its very good quality and unlike other blue tooth units its not stuck on the side of the lid ,this i find eliminates wind noise. The other one i thought about very hard was the SENA SH10 ………...http://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/92774

my friend uses this and it is top quality stuff. BUT the bluetooth unit your using is only as good as the blue tooth connector in the phone …iPhones are not good at bluetooth ,the signal drops quite a bit .

Yep ! have used these in the past with an iPhone 4s (and their waterproof case) and also use their mounting kit for a TomTom Rider - have a power supply unit from them - connects direct to battery and has an inline fuse - also has a box under the seat so you can switch the power line on or off - terminates in a mini USB on the handlebar - the Ultimate kits work well if you have traditional handlebars / renthals etc ...
