Get a drink and make yourself comfy - this is a long comment

Don't worry Woody - no-one's going to accuse you of taking the piss for asking a sensible question :)

Most people have got a pretty good understanding of the way things need to work. Take the piss, have a laugh, enjoy your time here. Lee's explained the difference between it being a public forum and it being public property quite well so I won't go into that.

I know some members think that certain mods have gone "power mad" but that's not the case. Usually what we're faced with is a few hundred people all wanting to be nice and happy and one or two angry people that cause a ruckus. If left unchecked, that ruckus then starts to polarise people, which eventually leads to different, warring groups. Throw a few people in the middle who think it's fun to play both sides, or enjoy winding the others up and suddenly you have Godalmighty flare up with people storming off, threatening others, offering people out and generally behaving like bunch of primadonnas. THAT is what we're trying to avoid. By nipping certain behaviours in the bud before they aggregate into something bigger we keep everything ticking along nice and smooth.

One thing that has never been accepted on the forum though is threats, either implied or explicit. Paul took a few days off to try and recharge his Wotsits Pouch and have a soak in a nice long bath of Ginger Ale, only to come back to another warzone with people complaining, grumbling, lots of "he said she said" finger pointing going on, etc.

I suppose that the easiest way to think of things is to imagine you're visiting a friend's house - a friend who you like and respect. Banter, opinions, arguments, jokes - all fine. Nastiness and all the general Dark Arts of anti-friendship generally aren't accepted behaviours in those circumstances.

Like Mike said - treat others with dignity and respect and if you have any dirty laundry to air then do it via a more private medium - not via the forum. If you're on your mobile and using the mobile version of the site, turn your phone landscape (rotate it 90 degrees) and the FORUM RULES button should be on the right hand side of the top bar, next to NEW POSTS. If you're on Tappatalk then I don't know, as its the Devil's own creation and I've never used it :p

Alternatively you can click this: http://northwestbikers.net/index.php?help/rules

Most people will have seen a new splash page when they logged into the site this afternoon, which shows them the rules and they had to click Accept to carry on into the forum.

To be honest there's nothing new in the rules. They've always generally been applied, but they haven't actually been enshrined in writing since the previous incarnation of the forum - Chucky lost them when we updated (silly billy) and until recently we've always dealt with problems with a private message and everyone's been dead nice and reasonable, no worries. Recent events though spiraled out of control and PMs could do nothing, and that's been echoed again recently with the forum raids (both given and received) that stirred up another load of aggro. I and others have done our best to restore peace and to try to stop these sorts of situations happening as believe it or not it takes up a HUGE amount of mod/admin time to try to resolve it. I'm self-employed and I've spent the best part of 2 days in the last week dealing with fallout from problems on here, most of which would've been prevented if the rules were in place and abided by.

Think of it like stopping at a red traffic light. You delay your journey and inconvenience yourself a little because you understand the convention that the lights represent. Knowing that everyone else stops at a red light means you can proceed through a green light without having to worry that you're about to die horribly (unless you're in the car with me, in which case that's always a palpable risk). It means giving up a little bit of your freedom to do what you want but you understand that if everyone does the same then it makes life safer, less stressful and more predictable. Same goes for forum rules, really.

As for bans, things will have to be pretty OTT to get one. Paul made the decision to issue the earlier ban today and I had no part in it so I shouldn't really comment. Never stopped me before though, so...... I suspect that it was because there was no need to post that "let's meet face to face" as a public comment. It could and should have been sent by PM. Posting it in public was everything that NWB isn't about. It isn't about threats (implied or explicit), violence/fighting, or even just about people trying to "win points" over other people or shame them in front of their peers. The comment had an implied undertone of violence that I suspect Paul saw and thought "Nah." *click* There was no reason or need for it to be a public post.

Anyways, Paul is drawing up the formal "points make prizes" schedule for warnings. Everyone can be issued warnings (if you go to your profile page and look at your stats on the left it tells you how many warning points you have. If you have any, clicking it will give you more detail). Suspensions and bans are NOT going to be issued directly by mods/admin - we can just issue warning points. The schedule will be set up so that when you get to a specific number of warning points it triggers an automatic penalty (whatever that might be is up to Chucky). Basic infringements will get a quiet PM and perhaps 1 single warning point, but repeated offenders will obviously accumulate points until it triggers something.

(I can only dream of it...)

Obviously more serious gross breaches of the rules, or deliberate and aggravated rule breaking will probably land someone with a suspension or permanent ban on the spot (depending on how many warning points get issued).

Fat Bob has always had to watch out. Between the Japanese "research vessels" and Greenpeace wanting to drag him back into the ocean he has a pretty rough time of it :p

I take it rich will be unbanned?

If i call some a prick and they imply they would beat f*ck outta me of course I would ask to see them face to face. I know its pauls forum but surely then the rest should be banned aswell? I can think of a dozen people that have done the same/similar.

Think of it as road rage, how many people shout and swear through there windows "You F*cking ******" etc none of these are threats just aggression and seem let off. Chances are if I ever say "Meet me and I'll kick F out of you!" its very rarely ever going to be followed through.

People get brave on the internet and recently I've seen ALOT of "victims" winding people up to breaking point.

I would like to remind people of the following:-

You do not have the right to not be offended.
